Depends on which Nikon, but since that's a pretty broad price range, you're in Nikon Monarch territory at $500, and no Chinese made Mueller is likely to be in the same league optically as the Nikon Monarch.  If your budget allows for up to $500, I wouldn't even consider a Mueller and would focus solely on the Monarch series.  In fact, I would personally select ANY Nikon over ANY Mueller of the same magnification range.

I have a Remington 700 VS in 22-250.  After much angst, I selected the Nikon 5.5-14 Buckmaster w/AO.  This scope has never disappointed me.  The lower range of the scope allows me to shoot accurately at close, running targets while the higher end of the magnification is extremely clear even at long range (over 600 yards).  I must admit I have never peered through the higher end scopes such as Zeiss, S&B and the such only because I cannot afford or justify their cost.  I recently purchased the Monarch 5.5-20x44 BDC from the fine folks at SWFA, but haven't had time to sight in my new toy, a 243 WSSM.  Hope to make this rifle my long range critter gitter.  My advice is to shop around and be patient.  Bought the Buckmaster new for less than $225 and the Monarch for $315.

I agree if your budget allows for $500 then I would go with a Nikon Monarch or several others come to mind. No Mueller is in its class, nor the class of stepping down to the Buckmaster. However, since it was mentioned above, I'd personally take a Mueller over a Nikon Prostaff any day.

Some others to at least consider that might be in the price and magnification range

Weaver Grand Slam

Bushnell 4200 Elite

Sightron SII

just three that came to mind.  Good luck

AC
