Hi,

I would appreciate some recommendations for a great varmint hunting binocular.  I have searched through the topics in the “Binoculars” forum looking for information and recommendations on binoculars in regards to varmint hunting, but have not found many comments.

When I say “varmint hunting”, I am primarily concerned about binoculars to use for coyote hunting and prairie dog hunting.

Coyote hunting consists of doing some calling, then looking for approaching game for a few minutes, and then calling again, and looking for approaching game again, etc.

Prairie dog hunting involves looking for game at a distance, and doing some spotting for fellow shooters.  I realize with prairie dog hunting, that maybe I should be considering a spotting scope instead of binoculars, but I am open to opinions.

Neither the coyote hunting or prairie dog hunting involves a lot of walking or stalking for me.  I am not a big game hunter.

I live in the upper Midwest, so both my coyote hunting and prairie dog hunting is done in pretty wide open, semi-flat country, with very little trees.  There are occasional rolling hills and some creeks, draws, gullies, etc. in my area.

Considering the primarily use of these binoculars for varmint hunting, what should I be considering for things like:

* Magnification power

* Objective size

* Weight

* Brands

The older I am getting, the more I am realizing in life you usually get what you pay for, so I am definitely more interested in the middle to higher quality lines of binoculars, and hopefully this will be a “once-in-a-lifetime” purchase for me.

Thanks everybody!

You really need two binoculars for what you want to do.  One with a decent exit pupil and wide field of view for the coyotes and one with high magnification for the prairie dogs.  But believe it or not Leica has ONE binocular that does all of this, its called the Duovid.

The Duovid is a dual magnification binocular that allows you to switch from a low light / wide field of binocular to a high magnification binocular by simply turning two dials.  The Duovid is available in these two models:

Leica Duovid 8+12x42

Leica Duovid 10+15x50

Thanks, Chris!

I will give those two binoculars some serious consideration.

Any word with the dollar getting so weak against the euro, whether import binoculars (which I thought Leica is an import) will be going up in price soon?

They have gone through the roof this last year for that exact reason.  We have some on the SampleList.com site that were bought early this year (three price list back), check them out.
