I got a sample variable-power scope to evaluate.  Unfortunately I did the water test first, and it failed due to a broken O-ring in the power-ring screw.  The manufacturer said not to bother sending it back so I figured this would be a great opportunity to attempt a scope tear-down (and maybe even rebuild).

So I have the power-ring loose, but how would one proceed to disassemble a typical variable-power scope?

I took all the screws out of the adjustment turrets, but that doesn't seem to open anything up.  It looks like there is a brass pin just below the ocular bell housing.  My next guess would be to attempt to unscrew that.  But I have no idea if I need to drive that pin in, just start torquing things, or if there are adhesives that need heat release?

There are often differences in scope construction.

Objective lenses come out the front.

Erector tube can usually be taken out once the eyepiece is removed.  For most of these things though, you sorta need to know what you are doing.

Which scope is it?

I can afford to make mistakes on this one since it has been written off.  This was a Chinese manufacturer sample; don't know if it's white-labelled on the market here.

I got the ocular bell off even though it had a white adhesive seal holding it on.

Now I'm facing a bunch of tight threaded lock rings with small opposing notches.  Those are probably glued/sealed too.  What would the best tool be for trying to unthread those lock rings?
