Have frequently read statements about true magnification ranges of different variable power scopes.  E.g. Leupold

1-4, actually 1.5 - 4.2, etc, etc

Where does this info come from and why the difference between actual #'s and those stated by the manufactures?  Can understand rounding up or down in some cases but it would seem to me that a .5 or greater mag difference at the low end of a scopes rating is fairly significant

There are no standards of manufacture. Probably the best way to designate would just be low power variable, mid-range variable,or higher power variable.

the info itself is usually available at the manufacturers website, under an individual scope technical specifications. The reason for the difference is either to round a number that is very close to it's nearest interger, or for mere advertising purposes. Think about it, if a scope is really a 3.3-7.2 it sounds better if they say it is 2.5-8, that may ultimately get more purchases out of a scope otherwise.
