Beach dog I have two  VXII's and though not the best it will serve you well! if you just want something new well then go for it. if you want to stay in the $300.00 range and a 3x9x40 look at the bushnell 4200 it will be quite a step up.

That should work fine, assuming appropriate magnification range for your intended uses.

The Bushnell 4200 that Rifle Looney suggested is better optically, though.

Sounds like you may have the vari-x II 4-12x40 AO with fine reticle. I hunted with one mounted on a m700 for years and really liked it. I'd probably consider one again (in the newer Leupold line). The vari-x line was discontinued years ago and there's been vast improvements since then, the Bushnell 4200 being one of 'em.

Your vari x II has two very redeeming features 1) its paid for  2) a higher resale value.  You might try to trade it or sell it  to add to your next scope.

I have a Vari X II on my P-dog rig.  It only misses when I do.  Optically it is not the best, but during the day it works great.

I have a VX-II w/LRV  6x18 on a 220 swift. I have two Rem 700 rigs went to Bushnell 4200 6x24x40 mil-dot I'm hooked on the elites. To my eyes they are better all the way around. In the process of another 204 and it to well get a Elite 4200......save up more you will be glad you did...
