Hi, I have a Ruger 77/17.  I had a simmons 4-12 with and AO on it and it mounted, worked fine.  I swapped it with a Weaver v16 a few months ago and when I bore sight it, i do not have enough adjustment. the dot is right of center looking through the bore (according to the bore sighter).  Are the V 16's short of windage historically?  They are the same rings when I had another scope on it.  I did sent the scope to Blount for a reticle repair last years, and it worked fine on another gun.  Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

First don't believe bore sighters, try it on paper.
Still bad? Then center the windage adjustment (turn it all the way one way and then counting the turns, all the way the other.) Then put it back to the midpoint.
Assume you are using Ruger rings (?) If so:
1. Try switching front and back rings around.
2. Try reversing them side to side (move them so the locking screws are on the opposite side)
3. Try one ring with the locking screw on the right, the other on the left.
If 1,2 or 3 move the point of impact more than an inch or so you either have a misground reveiver dovetails, bad rings, a crooked scope tube.
The Weaver is a much better scope than a Simmons. Good Luck.

Reversing the rings won't work on the Ruger, because they have half moon shaped notches in the bottom of the rings that key into the receiver, only fitting in one direction.

You might also try lapping the rings, as your rings may be twisting the scope tube a tad.  It doesn't take much misalignment to consume all your scope's adjustments.  You can get a ring lapping kit from Brownells for about $50, which includes the lapping rod, lapping compound, and instructions.  A little expensive, but if you mount very many scopes, it isn't too bad, especially since MOST ring/receiver combinations are misaligned to some degree.  Another option is to try different rings.  Warne, Leupold, and Burris make Ruger style rings.  S&K makes some very nice Ruger rings as well -- very simple, clean, and rock solid.  If nothing else, Conetrol has Ruger style rings in their Dap Tar series that uses separate bases, allowing you to adjust windage screws to move the rings to compensate for misalignment, which will definitely fix your problem, though it's a rather expensive route.

I would second what rootmanslim stated. Sounds like the reticle needs to be centered. Shouldn't be a major difference between the Simmons and the Weaver regarding the amount of windage adjustment available. I had a V-16 and thought it was a good scope for the bucks (no pun).
