I'm conflicted: I need a new scope. I own a USO, I love the USO, but it's allot o' $$ for a scope.  I hear really good things about IOR but have never owned or shot one.  And I can get the one I want for about $800 less.

So, for those with experience with both: is the USO SN3-T-PAL worth the $800 extra over the IOR 3-18x42?

Both have what I want, mostly.  I prefer the EREK elevation of the USO but I'm guessing the 35mm tube on the IOR brings the IOR close on elevation.

And did I mention the $800 price difference.

And, to Chris' credit, I would be most displeased with the prospect of buying a scope from someone other than SWFA, but I will - since Chris doesn't carry USO.

But, is the USO worth the extra $$.  I can't say, having never owned, handled, or fired an IOR. if I had another $1,000, Id call it a day and buy the S&B PM2, but I don't - so I'm not.

It'll be going on a 300WM for punching paper at long ranges and perhaps some competing.

Any thoughts?

I am a big fan of IORs, so my response is quite predictable.  Is USO a better scope? possibly.  Will you be undergunned with an IOR? definitely not.  If push comes to shove, you can alway sell your IOR if you are not happy with it.  I think that is very unlikely though.  Just about everyone I know who bought an IOR recently has been very happy with it.

I noticed the ST17 fixed 17x44 USO is  $1095 base price add $86. for Mil scale GAP Reticle and its within buying range. Just a thought, as I seem to be in the same situation looking at scopes for a 300 WM that currently has a Leu 10x  M3 on it.  I'm sure IOR is top shelf but I really would like to have a USO or a S&B in that mid to high variable 4-16 or so power range.

17X is too much for most apps, in my opinion. Especially for a fixed.

I own a USO and want another, they are great scopes.  But if the IOR is 90% the scope at 60% the price, that translates to a kick-ass deal in my mind.

Then again, what is in my mind and the reality of the thing ain't always the same.

Rancid, I have zero experience with USO, but I d@mn sure like the IOR 4-14X50 30mm Tactical MP8 I own!  It has a couple quirks I'm not fond of, most notably the cumbersome method used to zero the indicators on the turret barrels and the fact that I wish the illumination controls had a couple dimmer settings.  Otherwise, it's optically excellent in every respect, has a nice large FOV, huge sweet spot, and I absolutely LOVE the MP8 reticle!  The 30mm version has such superb optics that if the 35mm is any better optically as it reportedly is, it must be incredible!  At first, I didn't particularly care for it's odd aesthetics, with the large squared off turret block and the extra projections of the magnum lock & illumination control, but it's growing on me, and it certainly isn't as strange looking as some of the USOs.  Yes, USO offers the benefit of allowing you to customize every aspect of the scope to your preferences, but you certainly get a lot for your money with the IOR!

I would have a difficult time believing you'd be anything but very pleased with one.

Rifle Dude:

I didn't care for the IOR's way of setting zero either.

That said, USO's have a kind of hinky way to set theirs as well.

After having both an older IOR and a USO scope, the USO wins hands down in the knob dept.

Has IOR changed it's knobs lately or have they remained the same as the older models?

The knobs on the current IORs are of the same design as the older IOR you had, cheaptrick.  THey improved the feel a little and the accuracy (which was pretty good to start with), but it is the same basic design.  The new knobs on the 40mm scopes, are, reportedly, of a different design and the Snipershide-designed 35mm scope has the new knob design as well.

As soon as the snipershide scopes get here, I'll play with the knobs and report on them.

My 2.5-10 Tactical IOR actually tracked very well and it "clicked good" too.

I just thought the knobs were kind of on the smallish side. Especially if wearing gloves.

Look forward to your review, O Evil One.

Yes, Cheaptrick, I do wish the knobs were a little larger as well.  If yours has the 2 cap screws you have to loosen, then firmly hold the top disk while simultaneously turning the barrel and trying not to disturb your zero setting in the process, then you have the same knobs I do.  However, adjustments do feel very solid/positive.  Would love to have a USO; I just have a difficult time with the price.

Dark Lord, do you know if the new knobs are retrofittable (is that a word?) on the current scopes?  I too look forward to your review.

Yea, please report.

Chris says the new IORs aren't in yet.  I'll probably wait on the review of the new before I finally decide.

Thanx for the info on the IOR, strengths and shortcomings.

I do not think the new knobs ill be retrofitable, but we won't know for sure until the new scopes make it here.
