When I go prairie dog hunting I always take the video camera with me.  The camera is a sony Digital 8- (older model so I can afford to break it), with a 10x optical zoom and like 74x or something digital zoom.  I always zoom in on the shots but digital zoom as many know really isn't a zoom at all, It's like sitting closer to the tv to see the picture bigger.  i.e. the video quality is drastically reduced and prairie dogs at 600 yds are barely visible.  My question is whether or not I can effectively use a spotting scope in conjunction with a video camera to up my optical zoom substantially.   I know that Leupold has a provision for this type of thing but it's kinda pricey.  If anyone has ever tried to do this or can show me an example I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm looking for an economical setup because it will be handled fairly roughly.

This may be a little late but, Nikon makes a Universal Mounting Bracket which will line up a spotting scope to a video camera or still-picture camera.  I can't gaurantee it would work with spotting scopes of different brands than Nikon but, from the looks of it - there should not be a problem.  Basically this thing just allows you to lock the camera behind the spotting scope and take pictures directly from the eyepeice. I believe this bracket sells for right around $200.
