I recently looked through a U.S. optics 1-4x scope and it really impressed me. I realize the ior scopes aren't quite as good as U.S. optics but how close are they? Is the glass as good? I wish I could compare the two but I don't have that opportunity. I know I speak for a lot of others when I say thank you to those of you who do these comparisons and share your knowledge with the rest of us THANKS.  S.B.  Cool

Don't think many here have the 1-4 USO.  Now if you want a good 1-4 get the SWFA SS 1-4!

Hi, Scott.

I haven't done this comparison, and I've only seen a couple USO scopes, none of which were the 1-4.  Members such as Koshkin, Rancid Coolaid, and Jon A may have compared the USO 1-4 against the IOR 1.1-4.  Like SVT said, I highly doubt many here have the USO 1-4.

From what I have seen of both brands, in general, I think IOR and USO are pretty close in terms of image quality... close enough that different people will disagree on which they think is better.  I realize that doesn't specifically answer your question, but it's all I can offer.

USO 1-4x is the #1 choice for rifle in 3 gun competition.

I don't think that is accurate.  I've seen many more trijicon and Nightforce than SN4s, but maybe I am in the geographic twilight zone.

I have owned an SN4 1-4X, thought it was pretty good.  It was durable, well built (tank-like, actually), but certain reticules turn useless when in a 1-4 FFP and their circle chevron reticle is one of them.

The glass is good, the turrets are OK, not EREK so not the best), illumination with them has never been my favorite (saddles get too cramped) but it is a very serviceable scope.

That said, I'd take an SS1-4 any day over a USO SN4 1-4.  It has better glass, I like the reticle better,I like the turrets better, it ain't as beefy but still isn't fragile, and the eye box seems (to me) more forgiving of head position.

I could be wrong, but I don't think my 1-4X was a true 1X.

I've owned roughly 10 USOs, I like their stuff, I like the fact that one can custom order a scope for very specific needs; however, when the need is not incredibly specific (as it usually is not), I prefer other makers.  Their stuff is good, but there is considerable competition in that segment of the market, shop before you buy.

The best glass is what I'm looking for. I guess I'll have to try the SS 1-4. Although there is a Schmidt & Bender 1-4 on the sample list, decisions decisions.   Mr Coolaid thanks for the help. S.B.

As I haven't compared my SS1-4X side-by-side with the S&B, I can't say for certain who has the better glass.  I would guess S&B, but my SS1-4 is sure nice.  And, with a price difference of $1,100, that is ALLOT of cash left for actual shooting.

I have said many times before, great glass can make a good shooter just a little better, but more trigger time can make a good shooter great.

Coker has the short dot, maybe he can weigh in.

My money would go to the SS.

How good does the glass need to be for a sub-300 yard, low-mag scope?
