Sorry as I am sure this topic has been beaten to death and I have read a few post, but here a i go anyways. Im ready to pull the trigger and upgrade my ed2's for the new ED3'S. How much of an optical improvement am I getting?

I read a post that said the ED3's seem to provide a better clearer image at long distance (2 miles) and that with the new armouring is really making me want to go this direction.

What level or class would I have to go above the the ZR ED3'S to see that nex noticable jump in difference? I have seen many of the older leica trinovids for around 800-900 and that has also got my head racing!!!!

The ZenED2 or 3 will both have better optics than a Trinovid.  I had both side by side (my own) and compared them many times.  The Zen have a much better view, but edge in build quality goes to the trinovid.

ahiaring,

You asked what next tier you would have to go to in order to see a noticeable difference in optical performance over the ED3s...at least that is the way I took your question. The answer is that it depends what optical performance characteristics you prefer in your glass. I have the ED3s and have compared them with the ED2s and a friend's Swaro EL (pre-Swarovision). The only issue where the Swaros did slightly better was edge performance. Apparent sharpness, apparent brightness and certainly color fringing control all favored the ED3s.

So, in my humble opinion, and from an optical perspective, unless you want better edge performance you aren't going to step up optically from the Zen ED3s. Their centerfield performance is as good as any of the current offerings from Leica, Zeiss, Swaro or Nikon.

The new armoring and especially the new focusing knob is also sure to please many of the individuals who were not entirely happy with either.

Boy, that sums up the Zen ED series in a nutshell.  What you get with the alphas is improved edges, deeper depth of field, and a more refined build.  This is when comparing the 10X40ish models.

Mr. Freeman,

I am going to send an email to Zen Ray with a link to this thread. I am sure one of the folks there will be sending you a PM within a day. They will certainly address any concerns you have with your binocular.

I had to use Zen Ray's customer service for minor build issues and found they bent over backwards for me.
