I'm a western big game hunter and have been using the Nikon Monarch 10x42 for about 5 years and I'm thinking that an upgrade may be in order for this season.

What options can you recommend that would provide a very clearly noticeable improvement (even for a relative novice like me) over what I'm using now?

The factors that are probably most important to me are resolution and low-light performance.

I know my price point is probably a critical decision factor, but to a large extent it is a matter of timing for me.  If I can get a signfiicant upgrade in the $500 range I might spring for them this year.  If I need to spend closer to $1000 then I might need to wait until next year and save up.  If more than $1000 the wait will be longer...you get the idea.

Thanks in advance for the insights and let me know if there is more info I can provide to be helpful.

I used to have some Monarchs.  I would say the Zen Rays at under $500 should be a noticeable improvement in all categories, but none more so than field of view.  I have the ED2s and I will soon get the ED3s.

I had the Nikon Monarch in 8x42. I now own the Theron Wapiti in 8x42. Monarch was pretty good. The Theron is better. Much better.

Thanks for the feedback.  Seems there is a lot lately on the Zen Ray, Kruger, and Theron's.  Have there been any good reviews on the latest of these?  I'm interested which would provide the best resolution and best low light performance.

I think the models I have seen (Zen Ray and Theron) are mostly comparable.  The Theron is probably a hair brighter.

I don't have the Theron in hand and cannot remember how the ZR ED2s compared to the Theron APOs except to say that the images were comparable. I would leave it up to Klamath as I do believe he has both in his possession. I will say that the ED3s offer a brighter image compared to the ED2s. This was the result of the improvements in the dielectric and antireflective coatings.

I would love to see how the Wapiti APO compares to the ED3s at this point.
