Wouldn't you love to know what was on the right hand side of this map before it was torn off? How far East would this map have gone? How accurate would it have been? Who knows - maybe the other half will be discovered some day, in a back alley shop in Istambul...
Amazing how much knowledge was already in existence then. Somehow, ancients maps carry an aroma of mystery with them:-) There are actually quite a few maps or map-equivalent representations that go quite a ways further back, possibly all the way into the 15th BCE. There even are archeologists who interpret some neolithic drawings as maps, possibly back 15,000 years ago. No general agreement for that yet though.
I guess people 3,500 years ago (15th BCE, not Capt Reis) were no dumber than they (or some...) are today:-)
