They've been on the edge of "around", but the glory days are long gone.

20 years ago, their optics were great; by modern standards, they ain't worth what they will be asking - if they ever again come to market.

If you want an M40 replica, it has to have an Unertl on top; otherwise, spend the money for a superior optic.  $2500 will buy a nice scope.

As an aside, wasn't USO doing the warranty work for them at one time or am I incorrect?

Yes, near the end, USO was rebuilding all the Unertls as they came out of the field.  If I am not mistaken, those Unertls that were unfixable were replaced with USO MST10s - also a great optic, but also not on my "to buy" list.  $2500+ is allot for a fixed 10X.

Almost sounds like the MST-100 is a product of reverse engineering (no poon intended) from the unertl scope but perhaps a step up? I read at the Hide that Leupold use to fix Unertl scopes.

Is there a good reason why someone would want a fixed-x scope instead of an adj.-x scope?

It would just depend upon your shooting needs.  If all you are ever going to do is shoot targets from 100 to 1000 yards then a 10x would work.  But a still a 4-16x variable may do it better.  If you are going to hunt with the rifle then a variable would for sure be the better choice.  Unless you went with a fixed 4x, then it could be sufficient for all your hunting needs from close range out to 300 to 400 yards.

Many people believe that a fixed scope will be a little more durable than a variable scope as they have less moving parts.  That is probably true, but the good variables of today are very good as well.  Also many say a fixed scope will typically have a little better glass quality than a variable, all else being equal of course.  Because they have fewer lenses and internal parts.

Nothing is wrong with a fixed scope if you are sure it will fit your needs.  But in most cases the versatility of the variable is worth more than any of the possible advantages a fixed gives you.

I recently sold my IOR 3-18x off my precision rifle.  I now have a fixed 10x SSHD on it.  My reasoning, 99% of the time I run it on 10x occasionally 12x, but very seldom anything else.  The only thing I do with that gun is shoot targets.  So I figured I would sell my IOR and take the money to fund other projects and use my SS HD in that role.  For my situation it will work well.

Military issue day scopes were fixed 10X in years past due to the increased strength of the fixed power scopes.

Later, as adjustables got much (MUCH!) better, everyone moved to adjustable.  Today, to my limited knowledge (and excluding some heavy hitters like 416s, 408s,  and 50 cals), no day scopes in military service are fixed 10X scopes.

Various branches are running S&B, Leupold, Premier, Nightforce, and few other (mostly for specialized weapons), everyone has made the jump to adjustables since they are now as rugged (or damn close) and offer a much broader range of capabilities.

In my opinion, there is no reason (other than building a replica) to buy a fixed 10X in that price range.

I have heard that to about the fixed-x scopes being more durable. Makes complete sense really. I'm sure it's also a lot faster.

I would like to see Unertl come back some day and make a quality product. I would also like to see Redfield step up into the tactical world to. They have the funding and engineering; why not?

Mr. Unertl died, he was the heart of the company.  Since then, it's been all down-hill.  They have nothing new to offer in optics.  Their scope, 20 yeas ago, was the nutz; however, today, not so much.

Those of us who shot them back then loved them, many of us pursue then for nostalgic reasons, but few of us would take that over a much more capable modern adjustable power optic.
