I'm looking for a scope but I'm undecided.  My AR got a 18" Heavy Match barrel w/ 1:8 twist.  My main use for the gun will be plinking, target, and hunting (small game, fox, coyotes and maybe white tail deer).  I've looked around and I'm stuck between these scopes:

Nikon 2-8x32 Monarch BDC (299.95)
Nikon 2-8x M223 BDC 600 (349.95)
Leatherwood ATR 2.5-10x44 (349.95)
Nikon 2-10x32 Monarch BDC (399.95)
Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 BDC (399.95)
Leupold VX-R 2-7x33 w/ballistic Fire Dot (479.95)
Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 (599.95)

I'm really liking the Leatherwood for the Camputer option.  But I also like Leupold for the illuminated Fire Dot.  My budget just barely fits the Vortex.

Any comments or suggestions that mighhelp me lean one way or the other?

I like the vortex viper HS out of your list. I just ordered a vortex diamondback for a16 inch heavy barrel 1/8 twist AR

Welcome to Optics Talk.

I just got the Leupold VX-R 3-9x Fire Dot and so far, it's been a nice scope, for the $$$. Haven't hunted with it yet, but I have taken it out at dusk and rainy weather and messed around with it.
I think it will work well for a hunting scope. Reticle is slim enough to shoot groups too.

Any reason the SS 3-9x42 FFP isn't on the list?

I don't have any 3-9x scopes on my list because I would like a lower zoom so it can be used better for short range shots (30yrds).  I'm leaning towards 2 or 2.5 as the lowest setting but if someone can convince me that a 3-9x will work I might look into them.
I really like the illuminated scopes because they are great for low light shots but not necessary.  Just something that caught my eye. Smile

I'm really don't want to spend $600 for a scope but I put the Viper PST on there to see if anybody could convince me to buy it.

How do the FFP scopes work?  Kinda new to looking for scopes.

First Focal plane scope the image and the reticle is in the same foval plane. This keeps the reticle the same size in relation to the target at all magnification settings. This is great if you have BDC reticle or a mil dot because it will work at all magnification settings. Most BDC reticles are in the second focal plane and are only designed for one power, usually maximum magnification.

So a FFP scope would be better than the Leupold 3-9 VX-R Patrol or the Vortex 2.5-10 PST?  Would it work better for shots under 50yrds also?

AR 15 s can feel top heavy pretty quick with some optics I typically run a 1.5x Compact ACOG or a 3x Compact ACOG unfortunately the 3x was recently discontinued but the 2x has a tad more eye relief. I use A La Rue RCO mount that brings it way back the scope is very compact great glass and awesome illumination with tritium and fiber optic.  I also recently purchased one of the 1-4 Accu Point scopes and like it very much. I have had both the Comp M4 and M4s Aimpoints and like them also, but dont think they are as clear in low light as an ACOG. Other than these SWFA is coming out with a Tactical 1-6x that should be very nice in a couple of months.  Really I have no regrets my compact ACOGs are sub moa at 300 yds past that Im using heavier calibers and Super Sniper  5-20x50.

The La Rue mount above is about a two hundred dollar mount the SWFA mount below is about the least expensive solid mount for an AR

It's a nice looking set up but I'm looking more for an adjustable scope.

I'm not Leupolds biggest fans, but they hit a homerun on their VX-R lineup. I'd go that direction and then the Viper HS.

I'm running a SS 3-9x42 on my S&W MP15 AR.  It worked just fine out deer hunting this past November.

Give a SS scope a try.  Once you do, you'll see for yourself that you'll be hard pressed to get any other comparable scope for the same money.

Here's a pic of the SS mounted on my AR - the mount is a GG&G FLT mount.

I would pick this one because I dial in correction for long range but it may not be the best choice for you if you dont know what to do with the tactical knobs.

For the way I use an AR I want illumination and low power. I use 308 and 300 WM with high magnification optics. For an AR I like these types of scopes fast lots of field of view able to acquire targets rapidly and ideal out to about 300 yds:
