This week-end I managed to put in some good time at the range.
Rifle: 308 Win with Rem700 action Truvelo barrel 24 inch
Ammo: 155gr Palma, 44gr S335 running at 2750 ft per sec.
Scope: Leupold 8,5-25x50

First up was the range at Simonstown Navy. Conditions were great with no wind. I shot groupings at 200 m and with Lapua brass came in at less then 1 MOA. The PMP brass was a bit worse..

Sorry but for some reason cannot edit post. So here is part two:

The PMP brass (South African) printed a bit worse:

Unfortunately the range was not available for me to move out to 300 meters.

Not convinced I had the correct loads yet I tweaked the bullet OCL a bit and shot some more groups at 100 meters on the Sunday. Conditions were a bit windy, but OK at the short distances.
One load bottom left at 69.9mm OCL gave me a 5shot group I have been looking for. The one bottom right I would say was poor shooting. I had lost a bit of concentration by then and pulled the shots. There are three shots in center and 1 left, one right.

The barrel has only about 140 shots through it, so I believe it has great potential.
I can clearly see groupings shot with non-fireformed brass is way out. Allmost a two inch group.

So I will have to get all my old brass through the rifle before settling on a load and mass loading.

Hi 8shots!

Looks like you were having fun there, I am a bit jealous as I couldn't go to the range this past weekend. That is some very good shooting, by the way! It looks to me as though that rifle is a keeper, the 200 meter-groups show real promise! I have the exact same experiences with new brass, it just will not shoot as well as the fireformed stuff. I think it is because it is so much smaller than chamber size, and just lying in the bottom of the chamber misaligns the cartridge neck and bullet with the leade. Obviously your rebarreled Rem is one of those accurate enough to discern the effects of bullet/cartridge runout!

Best regards and good shooting,

Texas

In looking at your groups, I gather you are a righty?

What is your trigger weight?
Was the action bedded to the stock?
Is the barrel free-floated?
How is the crown?
Have you had similar results with this recipe on another gun (or this gun before the new barrel)?
What are you reasonably expecting?

If it is a precision hunter with a custom barrel, I'd expect better results.

New brass shouldn't cause 1MOA on a gun capable of 1/2MOA, do you expect 1/2MOA?

In the end, if it is a hunting rifle, 1MOA is perfectly accceptable.

Keep us posted.

What's your barrel twist rate?  Lighter bullets and faster speeds: it might not be the brass.

Rancid,
Trigger weight = 1/2lb
Action is bedded, but not done to my satisfaction. It is pillar bedded.
Barrel is free floated.
Crown is new target crown.
This barrel seems to be better then the old barrel. It is much more predictable and the off shots I could call.
I have invested a lot in this rifle and I am expecting/must get 1/2 MOA.

The brass is not new, but have been fired through a skew chamber with about 6thou runout.

I am a lefty!!!
Barrel twist is 1 in 10.

A 1/2lb trigger is tough to jerk.
Righty's usually throw rounds left of center, strange that a lefty is so consistently left.
1:10 should have no problems with 150-gr. projetiles at 2750, but some barrels like specific rounds and really hate others (such is the case with my GAP 300, it hates 150-gr. rounds.)

You say the barrel is new, was the action blue-printed?

Were it my rifles, I'd try a few new recipes with differing velocities and differing projectiles; maybe it'll be an easy fix.

Custom guns are fun - except when they are not!

It'll settle down.  Maybe the barrel just needs a little more lead down the pipe.

Wouter,
I don't remember if I asked you before about how much freebore you have on that rig.  I know it is set up for the 155gr Palma rounds.  But do you know how far off the lands your seating the bullets?
