What is the significance of the tube dameter?  What I"m seeing is either 1" (25.4 mm) or 30 mm.  Does that diameter influence light gathering potential, or magnification limits, or what?

As I understand it, the 30mm has the ability to transfer more light.

I remember seeing a formula somewhere that stated that some of these fancy 50mm objective lenses on a 1 inch tube could not transfer any more light than a 44mm lens because the lenses in the tube couldn’t transfer the light.

If I am not right the experts will correct me in the morning.

Hello guys, search these forums as this topic has been discussed by the best of the posters here many times. Tube diameter does not affect light transmission, though it gives you more adjustment range. Objective lense does affect exit pupil which is

Obj lense dia/power......... i.e. 6 X 42 scope has 7mm exit pupil.

Coatings and glass quality are very important, too.

If you want maximum light transmission.......

mind your objective sizes (bigger the brighter), exit pupil (higher the better), and glass quality (fully multi coated)

and DONT buy value scopes, there is a reason they are cheaply priced.

pay no attention to tube diameter - that ONLY relates to range of adjustments (W/E clicks)
