I received a Alpen 20x60x80 spotting scope with angled eyepiece as a gift.I have decided on a Monfrotto 055xb tripod, but Iam unsure of which head to get.The standard pan and tilt head or the ball grip with side lever or pistol grip?Anyone have or use these types of heads? Thanks for any help.

I prefer a gear driven head or a ball head. Gear driven like a Majestic alows for very precise adjustment by turning a geared crank but they are outrageously expensive and if i didnt already have one from doing pro photography I sure wouldnt buy one.  The ball head I have on the medium size tripod is a Gitzo ball and has been quite good still for your use the one with the pistol grip is quite a good choice and far better than the three lever system or a video type pan tilt.  Go for the pistol grip.

I have both the Manfrotto 322RC ball grip head and the 128RC fluid head for my 190XB legs and window pod mount.

Both are great heads - just  depends on what you like.  If you are going to be back packing, I'd go with the 128 fluid head as the 322 handle sticks off to the side and doesn't fold down as compactly.  If just for range/home use, take your pick.

I bought both because I didn't want to be switching heads between my tripod and window mount.  Am still not sure which head will reside where.

If you want to follow game or action, the fluid head may be more to your liking.  If you just set the head and look through your scope like at the range, the ball head is quite nice.

With my Vortex Razor scope mounted up, the ball head set on it's lightest setting holds the scope without slipping or sagging, so this head is more than up to the task.  Squeeze the handle, adjust to your target, release handle, and the scope stays put.

Might I ask why you decided on the 055 legs?  Do you need that much height?  I only ask because the 190XB is plenty for a scope and lighter to carry if that is a concern.
