I will soon be the owner of a Theron Mag82 spotter. I am looking at the Manfrotto 055 tripod with a 128 fluid head. Can anyone give me some more options for a good tripod/head combo? At same price or less? Thanks in advance.

tompac,

I actually have the Theron Mag82 spotter in my possession now. I also have the tripod combination you are asking about as well. This combination is very good for this scope.

Can't offer you any other suggestions at this point. Sorry.

I bought a Vortex STX and a 128 fluid head. I works fine but, it's not light weight. I couldn't a  Manafrotto tripod locally to look at, so got the Vortex. It will work ine for what I want to do.

I have the Manfrotto 190 with a 128 fluid head and a 322 ball head.  Love the ball head for range use.  The fluid head is paired with my window mount.  Both are great heads.

If you do alot of glassing for game - panning then the fluid head may be better.  If you like to set at a target and forget it, the ball head shines.

Just got back from the range using the ball head and I prefer it for that use.

The 055, 128RC, and Theron sound like a perfect combo.

The fluid head is for video cameras so they can pan easily. I like the ball head better and I have a ball head from gitzo that I like real well and a gear driven head from Majestic that is phenomenol but heavy as hell

I prefer a Manfrotto 055 size tripod.  It is about perfect for a large spotter unless you need a light weight unit.  The best head I have used is the Manfrotto 128 fluid head.  Having said that, I got a real good deal on a Slik Pro 700 tripod with a Slik 3-way pan head.  The Slik is about the same weight as the Manfrotto, but it is bulkier.  Since I don't pack my ZEN ED 2 spotter much, this isn't much of an issue.  The Slik 3-way head works well enough, but is not in the same class as the Manfrotto 128.  A good fluid head will pretty much cure you of wanting much else, from what I can see.  Using the spotter at the range where you are locked in on a target, a ball head works fine there.  But when you want to move around the scenery with the scope, the fluid head is the best.
