hey guys...right now i have a mueller 8.5-25 x 44 on my .17hmr...it is a decent scope for the money, but its not the quality of a leupold, burris, or nikon...i am considering getting the nikon 6-18 x 40 with side focus to try out...do any of you guys have experience with both of these scopes to compare??? the only disadvantage of the nikon seems to be that parallax is only adjustable down to 50 yards...im sure i could shoot down to 35 max with no parallax prob...i will mainly be doing target shooting (100-200 yds) with some small game when i get the chance...whatta ya think???

Why do you need a scope with such high magnification on a 17hmr?

17HMR has decent range for a rimfire, but I am surprised you are using high magnification scope for it.
Unless you are shooting at targets the size of coins, there is really no need for higher magnification scopes at your ranges (under 200 yards). Moreover, often times you will see better with a high quality lower magnfication quality than with a lower quality high magnification scope. On to pof that using high magnification brings in a whole slew of new problems with it that you do not get with lower magnification scopes. Mueller Eraticator is a decent scope and trading it in for a Buckmaster will not make for a significant difference in optical quality. I would expect Buckmaster to be quite a bit more durable though. For example, for the same money that a 6-18x Buckmaster will cost you, you can get a 3-9x40 Monarch with the BDC reticle which would give easy holdover points. Also, in the same price range you can get Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 with BallisticPlex, Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40, Sightron S2 3-12x42 and Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40. ILya |
