Hi I've been reading alot on your forum and had to join in to gleen from some of your experiences and vast knowledge base. I am looking for a scope to mount on my Rem 700 VTR in .308. I do alot of packing in the back country and am looking for a scope that can take the abuse and keep its zero. The  ranges I'm working with are the typical hunting ranges but enjoy getting the greatest distance possible out of my weapon just for kicks. I need to stay with a mill dot and can only spend about $500 right now (gov pay).I've heard great thing about the Super Sniper 10X42 Will this scope hold up and what are my other options?
   Thanks in advance.

A good tactical scope is what you want in my opinion .... I may get throunced on this ... but they're usually built tougher from the git-go . If you're asking which one in particular .... too many good ones ... check the magnification range you want then compare . By tactical .... I mean a " real " tactical scope .... not just some label on a piece of crap like some manufacturers do .

Welcome to O.T., Paul! Glad to have ya here!
I don't have a Super Sniper YET, but Everybody who has one loves it.
The only problem I see with that choice is too much magnification for woods distances.
It will definitely hold up to abuse as well as anything.

gotta agree on the 10x being too much power on a "woods" rifle...perhaps a 2.5-8, 2-7 , or the traditional 3-9 would be  better suited .

Hey Guys thanks for the advice, I am wondering how good a 3x9 would do out to 800yds yes the advantage of a wider field of view at 100 would be nice but how much do I sacrifice at the longer ranges? These may be dumb questions but I've never invested more than $50 on "walmart" scopes and want to get this one right. If I had the funds I'ld get two one for hunting season and one for the rest of the year. Any and all advice is appreciated Thanks,

9x at 800 yards would not limit you beyond the capabilities of the cartridge.  A lot of factors need to be in place to shoot well at that distance, and if everything else is right, very good shooting can be done with only 2x or3x power or even none at all in some circumstances.

Another good choice is the Leupold 2.5-8 with the B&C reticle.  http://www.swfa.com/pc-3497-307-leupold-25-8x36-vx-iii-riflescope.aspx It is a rugged scope with good optics and will not overwhelm the VTR.
