I know it may seem crazy but I am thinking about getting rid of my swaro.  I like it but it is too big and heavy for my backpacking trips and it almost always gets left at home.

I have been contemplating the gold ring hd in 60mm.  Nikon's 60 and 50mm fieldscopes looking interesting.  Any other good choices I am overlooking?  How do the ones I mentioned compare with each other and how much am I going to loose by moving away from my swaro?

Thanks in advance,

Scot

What about trading it in for the new Swaro M (series)? The 65mm is 12" long and 4 ounces lighter. Not sure which spotters you actually looking at but the ones I think you listed are in between the Swaro you have and the new Swaro.

I had the old style 65HD and once the eyepiece was added it wasn't that much shorter and didn't weigh that much less.  Unless they have really changed things I think i want to go shorter and lighter by a considerable margin.  The gold ring HD is 12 inches witht the lens and about 38 oz.  This may be my best bet unless I am missing other good quality glass in a compact package.

I've been researching spotters for a while now because I'm in the market too.  I just can't narrow it down & make a decision.  I'm not really wanting a big 80-85mm spotter, so I'm looking hard at the best 60-65mm glass I can find.  I know serious big game hunters and guides have used the Leupy gold ring spotter successfully for years, and our own JB really likes his HD version.  I'm not willing to spend $2k on a swaro or zeiss because I believe there's bound to be something out there that provides a great value/bang for the buck.  I'm currently looking for any info/reviews on the Kowa 663/664 Prominar spotters.  The Prominars are highly acclaimed by birders and benchrest shooters everywhere.  I know this model can be had for about the same price as the Leupy HD gold ring.  It can be very confusing to say the least.  Good luck with your search.

I feel your pain.  It is confusing and hard to narrow down a list without being able to actually handle the scopes, side by side would be even better.  For what it is worth based on my experince I think you are on the right track regarding the fact that a very good scope can be found for much less than the premier names.  My swaro is nice and there is a difference between it and the tier of scopes below it but not nearly as much as I thought.  for all the extra weight of the 80 HD and double to triple the price I was surprised the difference wasn't more.

I don't have an experience with the models you listed but have heard good results as well.

I talked to a gent yesterday that has had a few Nikon fieldscopes and are conviced they are the best bang for the buck in the $1000+ range.

UGGGGHHHHH.  The research goes on!

Thanks for your input!
