Getting ready to order some TPS rings and bases and was wondering, other than weight, what are the differences in the TSR rings between the alloy steel and aluminum alloy?  What is the strength difference and is one easier to lap than the other? The ten dollar difference and weight isn't an issue for me and I was just wondering which way I should go?

Steel is stronger, but well made aluminum rings can also be very strong.

On a 22-250 aluminum will be just fine.  I have aluminum rings on my 45-70 and 300 WSM and they are holding up very well.

Really it will come down to weight savings for you.

If your your receiver is square then lapping is not needed.  YOu should check that before you just automatically lap as it can cause problems itself.  I would get a Kokopelli accurizing kit or a Wheeler accurizing kit to verify before you take a lapping bare to your rings.

Plus lapping TPS rings voids the warranty.

I have some TPS aluminum rings on a 12 ga. slug thrower...no issues what-so-ever. Ask again in 10 years or so. LOL.

I do not think there is any strength difference worth mentioning.

Steel rings have slightly harder surface finish, so they do not scratch up as much.  However, aluminum is easier to lap if you need to do that.
