Hey everyone,
I'm a Pennsylvania hunter who hunts squirrels in the woods, we don't really have flat open fields like out west and our tree squirrels are smaller than ground squirrels I hear people talking about shooting on here.
I currently have 2 Savage 93 17HMR's. My first is my FSS (non heavy stainless barrel) with synthetic stock. That one sports a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 which I love. But I have a hard time hitting squirrels out near 100 yards with it. So that rifle is pretty much my 0-50 yard gun.
My other which I just got is the HEAVY barrel FVSS model w/ synthetic stock. That came with a junk Simmons 3-9x40 POS which needs to go.
SO, I've been thinking about a Leupold VX-1 4-12x40, since it'll give me a little more zoom for grey tree squirrels on my 2nd rifle. I really want a variable powered (up to 12x max) but am torn between the VX-II series since it has better glass, but they only have the 3.5-10x40 or 50 mm's...
To sum up everything, my first rifle is my carry gun in the woods, but when I sit and snipe I'd like a little bit more zoom with the best glass possible. Just don't know if VX-II is any better than the VX-1, especially since I lose zoom for slightly better glass.
Would you say the VX-1 4-12x40 will have the same clarity or better of my Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40?
Also, I do not want an adjustable objective FYI.
Any help would be GREAT!!!

The VX ll has the same coatings as the older vari x lll's so its pretty darn good glass. With 10x you should be able to see grey squirrels out to 100yds pretty good. The VX l glass leaves me kinda cold and yes probably compares pretty well to a bushnell trophy. With the type shooting you are doing (I used to hunt greys in SE Pa. and northern maryland) an AO wouldn't be a deal breaker although you will sometimes loose a shot while setting it at different distances. The resolution or clarity will be better with the VX ll and it will have brigher sight picture in lower levels of early morning or evening light when they are most active. I don't know if it was me I would probably opt for the 3.5x10x40 VX ll.

+1, what Focus said. The 3.5-10 Leupold is a good scope and will be fine for squirrels.

Well, if the VX-1 gives me the Magnification I want and is comparable to the Bushnell Trophy glass / light gathering I'll probably just go with that. I love my Bushnell, so the VX-1 will be good enough.
I just can't justify the price jump to VX-II 3.5-10 scopes, however I do wish the VX-1 4-12 came in a 50mm objective...

Why is 6.5 Grendel better than 6.8SPC? Just wanted to know, since your signature told me to ask!

Looking at two bullets that I would consider for hunting the .264(6.5) has a slight advantage over the .277(6.8) in both ballistic coefficient and sectional density. All other things being equal, the 6.5 shoots flatter and penetrates deeper. There is more discussion here http://strategypage.com/militaryforums/1-8389.aspx on the 6.5/6.8 cases you asked about. I would not bother with either for my purpose which is hunting.
