In Kahles’ defense, they took my gen1 in house and said it was bad enough to replace, for a non-insignificant amount of money paid by me.
They asked that I not widely distribute that information, as everyone with a gen1 would try to do the same. I always thought if it’s bad enough to say “it needs replacing”, why am I paying for its replacement. The whole thing was not agreeable to me, which is why I am now a huge Vortex fan. |

I completely understand RC's position. He bought a gen 1 and paid good money for it. Then Kahles comes out with gen 2, which hurts the value of the gen 1 scopes. RC buys a gen 2. The Kahles comes out with gen 3 which kills the value of the gen 1 scopes and reduces the value of the gen 2 scopes.
We would be better served if the manufacturers would get the bugs worked out of a product before they go to market with it.

Yea, so badass that I convinced myself a crap image was very good, till I had to use said crap image in the real world. I'm sure Kahles are much better now than the gen1 and gen2 K624i line. That said, I sunk lots of cash into something that was sub-par, and the company refused to do much of anything to address it - other than sell me a new scope. Too many great choices to spend more time and money on Kahles. I still don't buy Leupold, after about 20 years, for this same reason. I'll pay lots of quality and service, and won't pay diddly if you consistently - maybe even "occasionally" - fall down on either.

CA stands for chromatic aberration. CA fringes are color artefacts around sharp high contrast edges you see in scopes (more common at higher magnifications).
Kahles is slowly revamping their product lines. At the moment they are selling K624i 6-24x50, K105i 10-50x56 and K16i 1-6x24. K318i 3-18x50 should be available around mid year and I expect that it will be followed later by other designs loosely based on the same erector system. ILya

hi RC im new here, and interested in kahles scopes in general, and the k16i in particular. what does " ca " mean? I didn't read the entire thread so not sure. also, what is your assessment of the latest kahles 624i ? besides the 3-18 coming out soon, do you know of any other scopes they are selling in the US right now? |

It’s been awhile since this was updated, and a few points need to be made.
1. When I first wrote this, I think $$ invested played a role in perceived value. “The glass must be great for what I paid”, the flaw is now clear to me. 2. I started reviewing with limited time on scope in real world use. A 20-round box test run in 10 minutes or so is no longer a qualifying event for my optics thoughts. It is a part, for sure; but some flaws take a bit more time to really become obvious. 3. I still like the turrets and they do track true. I still like the concept of the parallax but it is picky as hell in actual use. 4. Kahles knows they made a bad line and they refused to stand behind it, that really doesn’t sit well with me. This scope is serviceable, but at an almost S&B and Hensoldt price, it is lightyears behind what it should be. 5. The Henny in my review is still the overall favorite, just no flaws in almost 10 years of use. The Premier went to the sample list due to Premier closing up shop, and a Tangent Theta took its place. The TT is now my second favorite, with the gen2 razor HD 3-18 running a distant third. 6. The “everything has CA” is like a Jag dealer telling you all brands are unreliable, it just ain’t true. 7. Kahles did address some of the complaints from the gen1 and gen2 days, leading to what is probably a better scope. Know that if you buy it, it might be okay. And if it isn’t good luck getting them to care. Lastly, with some time behind a Henny 6-24x72, I do love that scope. If they weren’t in a gray are for long term service, i’d have one. It is huge and bulky and really messes with weapon balance, but damn it is a fine optic. |

You are going to get a nice rifle. I have a few mounts I dumped my 42 but kept a few mounts I had for it 20moa and 30moa when you need them... I think i misplaced the MB I had mine threaded for a OPS Inc .338 can and dumped the package.

I do agree that CA is most noticeable when shooting at a high contrast target, but disagree that other good stuff has as much CA as Kahles 6-24. Having owned the gen1, it had CA in excess. The gen2 has significantly less CA (mine, at least), but it was still present. I ain't ponying up for the gen3. I love the parallax adjustment - at least in principle.
My gen2 K624i will probably be my last Kahles. It is a thoroughly serviceable scope, but they just aren't worth the asking price. If the parallax adjustment worked better, and the CA was gone, and the image resolution was MUCH better, I'd consider; but the whole " fool me twice" thing just bugs me. I'd look elsewhere. Hensoldt is still the best image I have had, vortex gen2 Razer is quite good (mine), my trusty heritage 3-15 is still among the best ever. I actually have 2 scopes with no rifles for now, so I gotta get shopping! |

I'm definitely considering the Hensoldt. Does the Zeiss FL have enough elevation for about 1200yrds?
(338L Improved) More great advice from Kahles. In reference to my white targets and CA. "But once you start looking at other objects/targets you'll appreciate the rest of the optic for the other capabilities." Now I have to get less contrasty, preferably not white targets so I can appreciate the scope. lol |
||
Maine? Where's that?

A friend has the Hensoldt 6-24x72 SFP, nice scope, great image, HUGE!
I have a 3-12x56 that I love. The Zeiss FL is no slouch.

I don't at all. Too much B.S. I hope he isn't the one responsible for my return. If my scope is returned in the same condition I'm going the Hensoldt route. |
