In benchrest, where rifles are often shot free recoil, with the shooter sometimes touching nothing on the rifle except the trigger shoe, a super light trigger helps reduce the possibility of any shooter-induced movement on the rifle that can spoil tiny groups.

I adjusted the trigger on my 700VSF and although I like the trigger it has that same, almost imperceptible creep that supertool is talking about.  I have the timney trigger on my 270, and that is probably my favorite trigger.  No creep, no travel.  Just a clean break at 3.5#.  Not sure what is on my 300.  I bought the rifle used, and it had a custom trigger on it (although not adjusted properly).  So I adjusted it, but it might be a touch light at 2# for hunting.  But it is a great trigger.

Never used a Jewell, and can't afford or justify it for what I do.  I like the timney trigger though.

My view is that if you are using a trigger pull at anything above 2 lbs then most factory triggers will work fine. If on the other hand you are working with lower pulls, then many factory triggers will have issues. Add to this that if you are trying for a high level of accuracy, then a good trigger becomes even more important. If you are at the level where your breathing, position building etc are having an effect on the super accuracy you are looking for, then only an aftermarket trigger will do.
Which trigger? Jewell first, then all others.
I have fitted a Timney trigger to my RemVSF and find it works very well. I can adjust it safely to under 1lb and it breaks cleanly. I had it set even lighter, but for tactical style shooting it became a bit of an issue (the odd shot being pulled off whilst still settling down in a position with the finger on the trigger etc.)

I can' t imagine setting the trigger for less than a pound but my experience is all based on hunting and not bench style. I have a Timney on one of my m700's set to 3lbs; most who shoot it comment on how much they like the trigger. I'll eventually put one on my "black rifle" as well.

Thanks for the info guys, it is helping a lot.  I don't care for them less than 3 either, I had it set for 2 for a short while and had it changed to 3#.  That is just to light for my wants/uses.

Sounds like the Timney or Basic is probably the best option for my uses, now I just have to decide which one.  Guess I will go talk to my smith and see if he has both of them on some rifles so I can try them out.

I agree with you that hunting applications call for a different rifle setup then a target type rifle (the description "sniper rifle" is taking to much flack so I will not use that).

However, I may be wrong, but I think that using a rifle built for shooting paper, a trigger more then 1 lb would make small groupings difficult. I certainly cannot do it if I have to really pull the trigger as opposed to "touch" it.
