+1 on the Howa/Weatherby Vanguards and Ruger Hawkeyes. Over here in Australia, these are well regarded, accurate, value-for-money rifles. More than a few Roo shooters over here have these rifles.
Savages are only just starting to catch on here in Australia and Remingtons lose out big time as they're over-priced to the point of being a rip-off over here (although well made).
I've currently got on order a Ruger Hawkeye Left Handed in Blue/Walnut in .308.

I cannot disagree that the Savage is a great choice (I have one and it is extremely accurate) and you will save some cash. Since you said however that you plan on hunting larger game such as Moose I would rather have a controlled feed rifle than a push feed (I dare anyone to tell me Moose are not dangerous game). With that in mind I would look at the Ruger M77, The Winchester 70, or a Kimber 84/8400. While the Kimber is at the top of your price range you are making a purchase that will last you a lifetime and you may want to buy the best rifle you can afford. IMHO that would be a Kimber.

Find the Savage rifle in your choice of cal. you will never be sorry.
After you choose your rifle you will probably have enough left for a ss 3-9 scope.Now you won't give it up.
Go to www.savagearms .com choose center fire rifles and look at all the different models.

Nice stick Hunter. Pretty grain pattern of that stock. I would be tempted to put a high-gloss finish instead of oiled with wood that pretty.

Wouldn"t hurt to find somewhere to "try them on ".. Everyone will have their individual favorites, but eventually your choice will be yours.. Some rifles just seem to fit some folks better then others, and you should find a shop that has examples and give them a try .

Love my Remington. Love my Ruger. Not sure which way I would go there. Hard decision on the rifle. There are so many nice rifles out there, and many of them shoot very well especially if you hand load. Probably lean a bit towards the Ruger. Just have a place in my heart for Mauser actions, and the those based on it. Caliber choices are good, although I prefer the 300 Win Mag. Would like to pic up a 264 Win Mag some time too.
