Gentlemen.

Has anyone here experience with sleeping bags that are made for extreme cold?  Im going hunting and we will be sleeping up in the mountains in a tent.  I need a new sleeping bag and am thinking if I should get a waterproof one, or just something that performs in the cold?

One thing that bothers me while sleeping outside is breathing the cold air all night long. Is there a bag that offers a shield over the face as well?

Thanks for all suggestions

My son has a Woods Artic 5 Star bag that is a big sucker but made for extreme cold.  It is supposed to be rated for -40 but that is probably a little optimistic.  It's expensive but is very flexible - it is really two down filled bags so you can use only one in more moderate weather.

I have been known to winter camp in the mountains here.  I use a goose down mummy style sleeping bag.  I wear a rabbit fur hat that covers the ears.  What makes a huge difference is the underlayment.  I use a thick foam bedroll.  If I happen to roll off of this I get cold very fast.  My friend wears a balaclava to cover his head and he likes it.  It is not too comfortable for me though.

There are a lot of good ones out there. What are you looking for a traditional or mummy style?

The latest sleep system the army uses is real good and versitle. You can likely find one in most surplus stores. It is a three part system and is built to be compact. I don't know the rating but I know we have never needed the complete system and we've been in some cold places. One helpful hint no matter what system you have is keep a number of softball sized rocks by your camp fire and place a charged (hot) one in the foot of the bag. You won't get cold. As for breathing cold air. If the bag doesn't come with a head cage you can make one out of 1/8th rod stock from Lowe's. One or two peices about 20ins. is good. Just leave them straight until you need them and then bend them half moon to fit snug in the bag over your head. Once in the bag put them in place and zip it to a three or four inch opening. You'll get the air you need and it won't be too cold. I would expect they would cost between 70.00 and 120.00 depending on the store. The army chages a soldier 360.00 for a lost one. Good luck!

For extreme cold I would use a mummy bag with a head enclosure. I have had good luck with Kelty and North Face.

Thanks. I think I like the mummy style bags and something that is compact to carry.

Any ideas where I can look one up on the internet?

+1 on tahqua's Northface suggestion if you want a mummy bag. Not only are they excellent bags but Northface's warranty on their gear is outstanding. I know this!! Big Smile

I shop @ REI and I'm very happy with them.
I have slept outside at below -10 before and my North Face worked. It still sucks, though. I would still wear a thermal mask over my face once the head enclosure is tightened up.

Thunbs Up Thumbs up on the Woods I bought on in 1972 that has 5 Lb of down. It has always served me well. I have been out in -15 while hiking in the Appalachians and it is very warm. It should be good to -40. In warmer temps just leave it unzipped. The woods I have breathes well. Moisture buildup that some bags have a problem with has never been a problem.

Maybe you need to dig a hole and make a huge fire and then cover up the still warm coals with dirt and then roll out your bag on top of that dirt.....and a good bag would be necessary, too.
