I'm looking around for a quality target scope for shooting F-Class and I keep coming back to the Nightforce NXS 8-32x56. Not a cheap option.
I've looked at Zeiss, Leupold and a few others, but they either don't have a reticle I like (Leupold), have reported lash issues (Leupold), are close enough in price that there is not really a significant difference against the NF (Leupold/Zeiss/IOR) or just not good enough quality to justify spending X amount of money when for Y-much more, I can get a NF with a reticle I like. Once I'm spending $1K, it seems like a small step to NF pricing. Too bad SWFA doesn't carry NF. Am I missing something here? I'd like to be spending around $1K or so, but it's looking like I'm going to be in thing $1500 range if I can't find a quality alternative to NF at the $1K price range. Any suggestions? |

Try a Sightron S III 8-32. Don't know what you want in a reticule, Contact Bill Ackerman (oscscope@aol.com) for a reticule change.

You can probably find something you'll like for less. But with the NF you only have to cry once when you get your wallet out. I don't even have one with that high magnification (the 2.5-10x32) and it has added confidence to my shooting. That thing is like a laser. If it would make you feel better, check out the USOs and the Hensoldts first. Then the NF will seem cheap.

Any reason not to use the Nightforce BR series? I like the side focus on the NXS but the AO is fine on a bench gun. It is about $300 cheaper.

I have the NF 8-32 BR and I am pleased with it. But I very rarely use it past about 18x. Also it has better optics than the NXS series. And if you get the NP-R2 reticule it can be used at different magnifications. NF tells you what the MOA value is at different magnifications. And I am guessing that is the case with the other reticules NF offers. But I would ask NF.

Hey Chuck, I think Im in the same boat as you.
I went and checked out the IORs at SWFA. I love the 56mm objective lens but I really want a variable scope. I love the NP8 reticle and can get it from NF. I really liked the $900.00 price tag on the IOR but if I save a bit more I can get the all in one package from NF.
56mm objective lens, 4x14x56 variable and the NP8 reticle.
It just hurts my feeling that it is $500.00 more than the IOR and I can't order it from SWFA.
Oh Well! Life aint perfect.

I will check the BR out again, but I did like the Side Focus option on the NXS. I know my own proclivities and I am very sure that if I "settle", I'll be having this same discussion a year from now, only I'll be out the cost of (or whatever I can re-coup from selling it) the interim choice.
BTW, thanks for the advice on US Optics and Henstoldt. It does make me feel better.... ![]() |

I too believe in the buy once, cry once theory. If the Nightforce has what you like, get it, you'll be happier.
Regarding the lash issues in the Leupold line, id this with th elevation/windage knobs or with the parallax adjustments (AO or side focus)? I have the new VX-3 and I haven't experienced that.
Thanks,

The lash issue is (or maybe was) with the side focus/parallax adjustment. It's been a while since I have revisted the issue, but Leupold engineering used to tell you that adjusted, you would need to rotate the knob all the way to infinity and then work back for best focus.

For the money, don't overlook the Sightron S3. If it is a designated BR scope, Sightron is a great buy! I'm just say'in! And people know that I am a huge Nightforce fan. |

I have heard nothin' but GOOD, concerning the S3's. Good glass, good tracking, great warranty. Everyone that owns one seems very pleased. I think my next target scope is gonna' be a Sightron S3. |
