There are lots of good postings in this thread that may answer some of your questions.  I've owned a 75 and 85 and by process of elimination the Talley QD was the best.  It has great repeatability if mounted correctly.  The levers are long and allow a lot of leverage in tightening.

Make sure the bases are completely and fully forward on the dovetails.  Tap them with a hammer and piece of wood (to protect the finish).  Then be sure both rings are fully forward against the recoil shoulders before tightening.  I preferred the short action bases on my long action because there was no overhang into the loading port with the rear base.  I found positioning the levers pointing towards each other and down about 45 degrees prevented most catches on gear or whatever.

I find Talley's are not the easiest to mount but they are rugged.  The lows will easily mount a 40mm objective lens.  I used lows with a 50mm objective lens on my 85.  I have no idea if the scope would interfere with the back iron on a Sako.

Can't comment on rings for the Tikka T3 because I didn't keep it long.  Mine had the factory bases and rings and I didn't like them.  As to the 85 itself I love the trigger and the smooth action but don't like the hard cocking, fit of the stock around the tang and small recoil lug system.  But no rifle is perfect.

It is a lot of money and I can't make a mistake. I have been shooting my last rifle for 20 years Remingtom 700 in 30-06. I hope I am just as happy with my new investment!

Any coments are appreciated!
I just got the Bavarian and it is a very nice rifle.  I am having a terrible time deciding which scope to go with, so I guess I'll just take my time to avoid buyers remorse.

Yeah, with a rifle that nice you gotta get the best optics you can afford that also perform to the criteria you require.

I love my Sako's but I have to admit the Tikka's I have shoot just as good and have a simpler scope mounting system.  The Tikkas have the same trigger and barrel.  Actually the T3 action looks very similar to a Sako TRG receiver.

I like Sakos
I have a 1959 Forrester 243 that my son now hunts with
Dad has a Sako actioned custom 22-250 he built in 66
I bought a Tikka T3 Stainless lite 308 2 years ago and it (like the others) is a tack driver
decided to "upgrade" to a model 75 greywolf in 308 (laminate and stainless)
didn't really like it, felt bulky in my hands
sold it
fondled a new 85 Finlight 270 and had to have it

so, I like the 85

I think Tikkas are the better value though
I still have my 308 and always will, in fact, if I had to choose just one rilfe it would probably be it.   I helped a newbie co worker recently sight in a lightly used Tikka Varmint 308 he got and my handloads (for my gun) produced one ragged hole, nice...

as much as I appreciate and admire nice handrubbed wood stocks and deep bluing,  for a hunting rifle, give me synthetic and stainless..
heck, my ARs are camo spraypainted and my Tikka just got the same treatment!

just a rough guess, that would certainly be a cheaper option for a damn nice rifle in that caliber. i remember not but two months ago i picked up a kimber caprivi in a .375H&H and the price tag made me return it to the rack faster than i picked it up. it was at least $3000 but man did it have some pretty wood. my .375 was cheap compared to those two, at $850, and mine didnt have a wooden stock either.
They call me "Boots"
.375H&H, cause a .376 steyr would be blatant overkill!

That's probably close.  The hunters are selling for around $1350 - $1400.

I went to Sako.fi before I posted.  All I saw listed for model 85's were the same old models + Bavarian model.  No "Classic" listed but they still had the Hunter model listed and the picture looks exactly like mine.
