I have a Marlin 30-30, Model # 30AW. It is not the new ones that Marlin is making now. I bought it new at Wal Mart in 1988. I have a cheap Simmons Deerfield 3x9x32 on it now. I want a lot better scope on it. It will be used at least 150 yard shots at deer in Tenn. I don't want a Simmons or A Tasco. I am thinking either a Leupold, Nikon, or Bushnell. Need some help. Thaks, gearyr.

I like a something in a 1-4x20 or 1.75-6x32 range.  To me anything over 32mm objective looks wrong on a lever.

+1 I'd go Leupold 1.5-5 in the VX3 or perhaps the 1.75-6x32 also a VX3. I don't really see needing more on a 30-30.

A compact 4X like the Leupold is a nice choice, also. It is very bright, contrast and resolution are good, and it looks great on a Marlin. No muss, no fuss with power adjustments on a 150 yard gun is nice.

...........Unless you`re shootin at squirrels, prarie dogs and punching alot of paper, the 3x9 you have on that rifle and cartridge now,, is overscoping!!

You didn`t specify a particular budget. All the scopes recommeded by the others are great choices. For your final choice, I`d keep your variable powers low, your scope light and compact, with a low straight tubed profile......If you`re budget is around $150, there is no better a scope for your application than the Weaver V3 1-3x20! Great Jap glass, 94% light transmission, wide FOV, and is very quick on the 1x with both eyes open aiming. For deer at 150-200 yards, the 3x setting is very adequate!!

I like the Trijicon that Uri mentioned, although all are great recommendations.

If you can find one ( gloss ones on SWFA and it's really inexpensive for what you get )
http://www.swfa.com/pc-12670-218-nikon-2-7x32-monarch-ucc-riflescope.aspx - I have a Nikon Monarch 2x7x32 and it is ideal. I also have a Pentax 2-5 Whitetails Unlimited on a Win 94 and it works great ( love the twilight plex reticle ) . Also, the Bushnell 3200 2x7 would work, and the Weaver 1x3 or 2.5x7 are great scopes for the $.

Not knowing your budget, I took a 'stab" with my suggestions .. Of course, you could move up to more expensive units, but I like my suggestions given a well  under $300 range.

I have the 2-7 Monarch, also. It is an excellent scope. Very clean images and bright.

I can not believe that the Bushnell 4200 3-9 for $249 has not been listed. This even has the coupon for a free jacket also. http://www.swfa.com/pc-7280-185-bushnell-3-9x40-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx  This scope has the clarity needed for the occasional tight shot thru a small hole in the brush needed at times in the thick Tennessee woods.

I agree.  I have a 4x Burris on mine.  I know everybody is going to dislike this idea, but I found very low profile see through mounts, that still keeps the scope very low, buy allows me to use the irons sights, such as in the woods bear hunting.  Where we hunt and a bear is shot and goes into the woods, you either follow with a large caliber pistol or a lever gun without a scope.  Since I use my lever gun for other purposes, having the ability to use iron sights in the woods and having a low profile scope that does not get hung up on everything works out nice.

That is an excellent scope for the money, I bought one. I didn't suggest it because I think it is a too large for the Marlin. I know it sure would be huge on my Win 94, IMO.

I went with the Burris FFII 2-7x35. 12oz and 11" long so it is smaller than most full size scopes but has the magnification to really use the new Leverevolutions. It has the German #4 and may not be the brightist scope out there but for $175 I like the setup. I also look at the weaver k4 4x38 and 3-9x40 swift permiere.

Thanks for the help. My budget is kind of low. I really can't spend more than $200.00 for a new scope. So I will try a new search. Thanks, gearyr

What about a Nikon Pro Staff 3x9x40 for my Marlin 30-30? They are a good price. Thanks, gearyr.

I like it because it is more of a period scope. I have the 336C centennial  from 1969 with a Weaver V-9 b. It has served me well for all these years. My preference just goes to show my period which started in the Tennessee hills.

I certainly respect that 3_tens. We need to suggest something for under $200.
I suggest the Nikon Team Primos 3-9.  You can't do better for the money. It is reasonable in size, has very good contrast and resolution and the low light performance is very good. If you call SWFA and can get into the 2-7 for less you will be very well served, also.

I just put the Nikon Team Primos 3x9-40 on my Marlin 45-70ss, and love it. Meets the $200 mark and it has great glass. Bore sighted and three shots, dead on! My brother is a firearms instructor for the city police and enjoyed shooting this setup. Even he was impressed with the scope, especially when I told him the price.  When I have more time I belive the BDC reticle will help me on longer shots also.
