Hey fellas,  I'm new to the site...thought I could get some insight from you experts out there. i just purchased a Rem 700 aac , and I need some advice on optics. This is my first bolt gun and my budget for glass, base and rings is about $800. I  would like a variable, illuminated, "built for life" optic. I'm not sure about 1st or 2nd focal. I really like the Leupold vxr 3-9x40 patrol, SS 3-9x42, and the Vortex pst 2.5-10x44. Ideally I would like the big 3...variable,illum, and ffp. Thats were my problem exists. None of the previously mentioned optics have all 3. The illum is just plane cool, the ffp seems easier to range. I know I shouldn't worry about cool, but if I'm spending that kind of $...why not.   I will be shooting paper at 100-500 yds, and would like to reach 1000 if the situation arises. Hope you guys understand my problem and hope you can help.

Welcome to Optics Talk.

I went with the SS 3-9x and have never looked back.

Vortex will have what you want in a few months. New from them for 2013 is a 2.5-10x32 FFP illuminated Viper PST map will be $799

Re-read your post and see your comment about cool... sorry I missed that the first time.

If you are looking for "built for life" I would have to say the SS is the best option and it would allow you to stay within your budget

+1 I do not think I have even heard of anyone who did not love their SS 3-9.

Of the 3 you posted I like the SS best, followed by the Leupy and the Vortex bringing up the rear.

But if I were willing to wait, I'd get the new Vortex when it comes out.
