expand x in f and g
f(x)=x*3+15x*2-16x-240
g(x)=x*3*3x*2-88x
find roots with TOL set to 10*-11
g(x)=6.3x10*-6
f(x)=4 of course

I would say c two by the fact that the graph of g(x) is just 4 units shifted up form f(x). It is not a horizontal shift because a horizontal shift effects the inputs not the outputs. A horizontal shift would be of the form g(x)=f(x+4) for example. Thus I think that the difference between f(x) and g(x) is the graph of g(x) is shifted vertically up 4 units...Am I right?

Simplicity it the best course... don't make the problem more difficult than it is.  You are merely looking at the result of graphing a function, then visualizing the result of translating that function...

The graph of the function g(x) is the same as the graph of the function f(x) translated UP 4 units.  f intersects the x-axis three times, but if the graph is shifted UP 4 units, the graph can only intersect the x-axis twice. g(x) is equal to zero for exactly two values of x between -5 and 15...

You let me fool you, it is a matter of inspection only...

Kirk's reply is correct... it was not posted when I began the "answer".  I had some strange problems with OT yesterday, could not access all day.

lost here also, if a shift up only gives 2, then the function isn't intersecting at fifteen anymore and doesn't qualify as a continous function. the orginal functions are written as continous functions not discontinous with upper or lower limits.

For the original question, 2 is correct, I gave the answer above.  AND, we are only evaluating between -5 and 15 on the number line.
