Looking for opinions (and I know they will vary) on what to use on a Winchester Model 70 30-06.  I have a Bushnell 4200 2.5-10x50 with a 30 mm tube (#4 reticle) and a Kahles CL 2-7x36 Multizero.  I want to set the rifle up as a mid to long range shooter for elk, etc and still take it to Africa.  I'm thinking of a 300 yard zero.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

300 yard zero for a 30.06 may be a little much, IMO.

i would zero for 200 and know your trajectory, should STILL be in the gearbox at 300.

the #4 reticle is the best for fast target aquisition. but the kahles has better glass.

if you want the BEST of both worlds - get a 1.5-6x42 kahles w/ a #4 reticle and sell one of the other scopes (to me)

good luck.

and welcome to the OT.

J

Brodeur -

I agree with jonbravado on the 200 yard zero.  When shooting elk, the vitals are so large that you would be largely indifferent between shot placement at such distances.  Of course, with the MultiZero, this becomes somewhat of a moot issue.

Go with your Kahles.

Did I read somewhere that the Multi Zero Kahles scope have had problems??

I might have confused the MZ with some other scope, so maybe I'm wrong here.....

Ditto on the 200 yd zero. As far as the scopes- the Bushnell has the right magnification range, but is Large. If you're gonna do alot of walking and weight is the issue- go with the Kahles..otherwise- I'd use the 4200

A 30-06 is a good choice for the light and medium African plains game. You should probably use a 180 grain or heavier bullet of premium construction. At 2700 fps, a 300 yard zero would put you about 6 or 7 inches above point of aim at 150 -200 yards. That could cause problems in the heat of the moment. As everybody else says, zero for 200-225 yards.

Ditto on the 200 yard zero and the 180 grain bullets.
My vote is for the Kahles, though the 4200 is a great scope, too.

kahles no question, africa aint alabama you know, there isnt just deer and rabbits running around, there is there that could kill you, i wouldnt trust my life to just any old scope so go with the kahles 7x on an elk @300 is plenty good

I would go with the Bushnell 2,5-10, zeroed for 200yds. A good 180gr bullet will stop anything up to Kudu. A lot depends on where you hunt though. The open Kalahari and Karoo regions call for long shots and a 200yds zero. The bushveld is different. Shots are at shorter distances and high velocities can cause a lot of problems. If you are going to different places, my advise would be to load up for the 250-300yd shots and stick to this. Trying to have a load/ bullet for this situation or that one leads to confusion at critical moments.
