Officials say photo of bear chasing half-mauled bison in yellowstone is authentic.

A half-mauled bison flees from a grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park

Why did the bison cross the road? To get the hell away from the 800-pound grizzly trying to eat him.

A photo of a half-mauled bison being chased down a Yellowstone park road by a large grizzly bear is authentic, according to park officials.

Yellowstone National Park West District Ranger Michael Keator tells KTVQ channel 2 in Billings, Montana that the photo, which recently began circulating on the web, was taken by a park employee in April 2010, between the Madison Junction and Old Faithful, in the Fountain Flats area of Yellowstone National Park.

What happened after the photo was snapped? We're not sure. But it probably didn't end like this.

That's not going to end good for the bison (buffalo).

With all the hide ripped off his legs, like having your socks yanked down, I don't think so.  I have had vets put down animals before whose legs were ripped down like that......nothing can be done....not even medically.

Those photos are really something. It would have been a nice meal for the bear. The bison looked kind of half-starved too.

Doesn't look like some of you read the whole story.  Wink

The bear never touched the Bison.  He got all the wounds in the hot pots, they are burns.  He got away from the bear and the rangers had to put him down the next day because he was burnt so bad and was not going to survive.

Actually I did read it. That's what I meant by "all that he went through". Getting badly burned in the Yellowstone hot pots, chased by a bear and escaping, only in the end to be put down due to his burn injuries. Sucks!!

I posted the pic of the bear because it was not in bad taste and an awesome shot regardless of the story.

I saw the picture some time ago, and honestly never read the story.  Just new it was taken in Yellowstone.

I saw a large black bear in those same kind of snow conditions up the Sierra Nevada (Cali) once upon a time. We were driving up Highway 4 by Alpine lake and as the road started to level off we saw two little furry things in the middle of the road. As the road leveled off more those two little furry things became ears, then the top of a head, then the head, head and body, etc. Oh sh*t, it's a bear!!! We immediately stopped the truck and sat in staring in amazement as the black bear, cinnamon in color, sat in the middle of road right on the painted road center line much like a dog would sit only much more ominous. The bear finally got up on all four, stared us down, then trotted to our left and into the woods while keeping an eye on us the whole time. That grizzly pic kind of reminded me of the black bear we saw that day.
