WWII vet discovers he’s not a U.S. citizen

By Liz Goodwin liz Goodwin Thu Mar 24, 10:39 am ET

Ninety-five-year-old Leeland Davidson discovered recently that he's not a U.S. citizen, despite living nearly 100 years in the country and serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Davidson, from Centralia, Washington, told KOMO News that he discovered he wasn't a U.S. citizen when he was turned down for an enhanced driver's license he needed for a trip to Canada to visit relatives.

"We always figured because he was born to U.S. parents he's automatically a U.S. citizen," said Davidson's daughter, Rose Schoolcroft.

Davidson was born in British Columbia in 1916. He checked up on his citizenship before joining the Navy and was told by an inspector at the U.S. Department of Labor Immigration and Naturalization Service he had nothing to worry about. Now he worries that he won't be able to prove his citizenship, because his parents were born in Iowa before local governments started keeping records of birth certificates in 1880. "I want it squared away before I pass away," he says.

Schoolcraft says they tried to dissuade him from pursuing the matter. Employees at the local passport office scared them, telling her father "If he pursued it, (he could) possibly be deported or at risk of losing Social Security."

"We keep telling him, leave it alone, leave it alone, and he won't, like a dog with a bone," Schoolcraft told the Centralia Chronicle. But Davidson says: "I want to get it done before I die." He also still wants to visit his friends and family in Canada. Sen Patty Murray's office is helping him with his application

I feel his pain. Took my wife about a year to get a passport, because of her hyphinated name. She had to go to our congressman and it still took 6 months plus.

Jamie...
Although I agree this is B.S., please honor our forum rules, sir.  This is a family-friendly forum, associated with a business.  This site is accessible by anyone of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs.  SWFA's logo is on the upper RH corner of the page, so like it or not, we are representing them with our posts.  They've asked us to refrain from using foul language and put a word filter in place to prevent it.  Putting hyphens between letters to bypass the bad word filter isn't an acceptable alternative.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Bureaucrats - a pretencious member of the rodent family who believe themselves superior and above the laws which others must follow.

"Freedom of Speech"... applies only in the "pulblic forum", not in the Optics Talk Forum which is privately owned.  This forum is owned and operated by a private entity which has the complete authority, under the Constitution and laws of our Nation, to regulate the forum content.  The owner/operator has nominated and empowered moderators to oversee the forum content and exercise a general interpretation of the forum rules, as presented to the moderators by the forum owner/operator.

In short, freedom of speech is a great thing, it is our right to express our views to the general populace... HOWEVER, that does not apply here.
NOTE:  While one has, under the Constitution, the RIGHT to verbalize or print one's views (provided the print media is owned by the one making the statement or that the print media has granted, either by direct statement or default, the right to express controversial views or views that may be considered offensive by the "general populace"), the Constitution does not demand or even imply that ANYONE has the obligation to listen to or read those expressed views/comments.   You must abide by the stated rules of the privately owned media and have, in fact by your membership, stated your intent to do so...

Nope, not "whatever."  When you registered your account, you agreed to the forum rules as a condition of membership here.  SWFA provides this forum for our use and pays for the bandwidth.  In exchange, they stipulate certain rules we're expected to abide by.  These rules are not suggestions.  This is a private forum with clearly defined conditions of use; you don't have free reign to say whatever you please.  As with any other private venue, there is no "freedom of speech" here beyond what our host grants us, in the same way that someone can't come into your private residence and say and do anything they wish on your property.

I removed a picture you posted a few days ago that wasn't appropriate, yet didn't say anything about it because I gave you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't realize it wasn't appropriate.  You continue to push the boundaries with your language, and we've let quite a bit slide.  Now, you very clearly spell out the "s" word in all caps in a thread title, and knowingly separate the letters with hyphens so you can bypass the word filter.  This crosses the line.  I asked you to refrain from doing so in a polite manner, and I expect you to respect that and be courteous in return.  It's a matter of being considerate to our host.

Whether you like the rules or not is totally irrelevant.  If you object to them, you're perfectly free to start your own forum with your own time and money and run it as you wish.  As long as you remain a member here, you will do more than "try to deal;" you will either abide by the rules or find a forum more suitable for you elsewhere, either voluntarily or involuntarily.  It's that simple.

Edit:  Sorry KB; didn't mean to reiterate what you already said.  You and I were posting at the same time.

OK here my deal with the whole thing. We can go to Ed's Beautiful Movie Stars see women with sheer tops on showing their tits, not that I care but come on bust my ballz about something other than me spelling B-U-L-L S-H <------ like that is not really fair in my opinion. Now about the PM I got from someone I am not or will not change anything! Sorry I stand by my statement, I have toned it down some & still trying to. Now K.B. I DID SAY DAMN NEAR!! Never said it was. As I have said many many many times before I don't mean to step on anyones toes. I guess what I'm saying is I am sorry but as I stated above I stand by my statement. If that gets me baned then its my bad, It has been a fun ride enjoyed the time I've had here.

1.  Plenty of material has been deleted from the BMS thread you cite.  Plenty of other 4-letter words have been deleted from plenty of other posts besides yours.  You are not being treated any differently than anyone else.
2.  Either "you're sorry" or "you stand by your statement."  The two don't go together, and you can't have it both ways.
3.  There will be no argument on this matter.  Drop it, save the victim speech, and move on.  Either follow the rules or you forfeit your membership here.  I don't want to see that happen, but that's entirely YOUR choice and entirely under YOUR control.
