So I'm looking for a scope to set atop my Rem. 700vs in .308 . I will be using it for hunting and target shooting out to 1000yd or so. The new scope will be replacing(don't laugh Big Grin) a 6-14X40mm nikon with a front parallax adjustment that can't be adjusted  with out changing point of impact. So at longer ranges I can't focus and see double. Until resently I only shoot over 300yds. once in a blue moon, so it wasn't that big of a deal and I was short on cash. I'm looking at tactical scopes b/c I want to get in to that type of shooting. Things that i think i would like on the scope are: FFP,mil-mil,30mm tube, and variable power for the 1000yd target shooting. The night force and leupold tactical models are in my price range ~$2000 so i was looking at those. Any input about tactical scopes wanted here, Thanks!

I have a number of NF scopes and love them, but for a few hundred more and still within your budget you could get a USO 3.2-17( Not exactly sure on the magnification range). The USO has better glass than the NF. But both have excellent mechanicals. But if you are set on a NF the 3.5-15 is a very good scope.

I beg to differ!

Also know that the only FFP Nightforce at this time is the 3.5-15x50mm F1 model.  All other Nightforce scopes are SFP.

That said, the F1 is an excellent choice, and you would be well served.  It also comes with a pair of Nightforce rings, which essentially drops the price another $100 or so.

I've owned a few NF over the years, and a few USO; the glass in both is about equal ("my" USO SN3 might be slightly better than NF, but not by much.)  That said, I've had no problem identifying targets or taking shots with either at 1,000 yards.

Don't get too hung up on glass.

Do not buy a Leupold tactical scope, NF beats the hell out of it!

Also, consider Premier 3-15, the glass is noticeably better than NF or USO and they are built rock-solid.  Also, the turret reset and zero stop works well.

Nightforce is a great scope and definitely the best "bang for buck" scope in the illuminated tactical scope segment of the market.  If you spend a little more, you an get nice features (better glass in Premier, custom features in USO) but Nightforce is plenty servicable.

If you are just getting into long range, Nightforce will be fine.

Don't buy Leupold!

First off thanks for the responses. They gave a well round view of the tactical scopes for me. I'm going with the Nightforce F1. After comparing it to Premier and USO I'm thinking NF is the best bang for the buck too. USO's Feature selections were cool but took me to far away from the money range.

I do not know if they are in stock, but I suspect they are a very viable alternative to Nightforce.

With the F1s breaking the $2K mark, I'd say the shine is wearing thin on Nightforce.  Especially since Premier got into the race.

It is a fine scope, and at $1500, it is well positioned.  At $2,000, it ain't my first pick.

This may answer my question as well. If i need variable power (preferably16x) and my budget is $1500-2000 than why would the mark4 be bad for me? savageFP .308 100-1000m shots and must have side focus and mil-dot. I want something that is going to take a lickin and keep on a tickin within that budget.

That last part is the problem: Leupold is no longer known for the durability of their tactical scope.

Their glass is decent, their mechanicals are decent, their Customer Service is said to be top-rate.  If you can get military discount, it ain't a bad deal for the $.  If you paying anything close to list, there MUCH better scopes to be had for less.

I can find a
Nightforce 3.5-15x50  1/10 mil with zero stop for $1785. or a U.S. Optics  SN3  3.2-17x44 EREK 1/10mil GAP reticle for $2279.99 but I'm not convinced I would want that when I could get this Premier for $2499. and the Premier is a 34mm tube where the others are 30mm.
