the two things I don't like about the pepper approach-- its really hard to find a good holster, and the practice cans are really expensive.

Hahaha my brother's wife put the kabosh on it for him until after Christmas....

In the meantime I bought one, should be delivered Wednesday.  Marlin 1895 SBL 45-70.  Not sure what the hell I need it for, but will post some pics if anyone would like to see it.  Probably wont get to the range until Thanksgiving though....

Congrats on the new rifle I know you will love the sight on it.  Word of advise though. When you go to the range take a small screwdriver that will fit the two set screws on both sides of the rear Ghost Ring as it screws up and down to set elevation and is held in place by the two side set screws.

FHF gear makes a killer holster that attaches molle-style.  Paul is a good guy, good cop, great gear maker.

The .338 Win Mag, the .340 Wby Mag, the .375 H&H Mag, or the .416 Rigby come to mind as the rifles I experienced as the rifles of choice from the hunters I learned from when I lived and hunted in Alaska (1980's through the 2000's).

My go to rifles are the .340 wby and the .375 h&h.  YMMV

Got the rifle last week, looks great, should be no issues.  Havent had time to go try it yet, but my brother ordered his from the same outfit...749 delivered.  Picked up some ammo at the local Cab store as they had veterans employee pricing, so ended up being 28 a box, which is about the lowest i have seen the Hornady 325 lever action ammo.  Will check cycling, have heard of the problems mentioned with the length of this ammo due to the flex tip.

Buffalo Bore Ammo has a lot of smack down.   I load my own and like shooting the 300 grain better than the 350 grain as the 350 has wicked recoil. I also cast my  own lead 405 gr which is a nice load. I know you will have fun with this rifle.

I have shot the hornady 325s in my guide gun and never had an issue with it feeding. I prefer the buffalo bore 350s the most, but as Wes said, they have a wicked kick to them. That doesn't bother me, other than sighting it in on the bench.

not while fishing, he shot one that tried to get into his house, but i don't know if it was a 12ga.

i have a marlin GG, i load 350gr hornady's on 58gr of varget, that can smoke an 18" poplar at 50 yards. that would be what i would get.

i would say it's not so much the size of the bullet, but how calm you can stay when a 1000# bear is trying to kill you. it would be hard as hell to hit a vital while they're running 30 mph straight at you.

i'd think that 3" 000 buck chambered then slugs. but how often does theory ever work out.

Don't know if it's the lowest rcoil round but I chronoed Remington 405gr ammo out of a GG recently and got 1260fps at 15'.  I can tell you the my 130lb daughter LUVS shooting it so.............
I'm going to be working up a load hopefully tomorrow if the weather cooperates.  I'll be using the 405gr Remington bullet and loading for a velocity of 1550fps which will be no problem obtaining.

So, finally got to shoot my 1895 SBL 45/70.  Brother got his last week, but hadnt shot yet either.  Im 5-8 175 pounds, but hes 5-7 and maybe 135 pounds, so was a bit worried he might not like the recoil.

Well, shot it today.....LOVED it....recoil super mild, could shoot it all day if I could afford the ammo.  Was using the Hornady 325 grain lever action ammo.  Great combo.  I wasnt shooting from sled or bench, set up a target at 40 yards freestanding.  Took a couple practice shots on some junk to see where it hits, then standing up with a good crosswind, and trying to draw it up quick and fire, put 3 rounds withing 3 inches of each other.

This was with the irons, and trying to make it somewhat quick.  Anyway, recoil was great, had a good feel to it.  Love the sights on it, very easy to draw it up and acquire target quickly.  Shot it with my other brother and step dad, they both loved it as well, wouldnt be surpised if they get one.....

Glad you finally got a chance to shoot it.  I like the 325s, but they are nothing compared to the 350 gr Buffalo Bores.  Those hurt on the bench.  But the 325s will get the job done.  Keep shooting and have fun.  That practice will make the difference if a bear ever does show up.

I don't think I'd trust buckshot on a brown bear unless it's at the end of the muzzle and there's no choice.  Brian Pearce just wrote about the ranger that had to shoot a grizzly that turned on him after being released from a trap.  He used a .357 magnum.  Five of the six shots didn't penetrate the skull.  Buckshot has failed on leopards, according to Boddington, Seyfried, and one of my leopard hunting videos.

My brown bear had a darned thick skull.  I think good deep-penetrating slugs would be a far better choice for a shotgun on brown bear, grizzly, or even blacks for that matter.

Here is link to first 3 rounds I shot with it at a bucket partially filled with sand just to see what it was like.  Hadnt handled a lever action for a while, and last was shorter 357 rounds, so had a bit of trouble loading at first.

Will say this was filmed to show him what to expect and briefly how to operate it, so its at a pretty basic level.
