Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an 'ulterior motive'.  She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German.)  Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids.)  She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghettoThe soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.  During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.   She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.  Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family.  Most had been gassed.  Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize ... She was not selected.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

Wow, she is a true hero.  What a difference one person can make.

As Ed posted, she's gotten her prize.

The nobel piss/peace prize(doesn't EVEN deserve capital letters)has become a JOKE and al gore(doesn't deserve capital letters either)certainly derserves it for the BIG JOKE that he is. To have given it to Irenea Sendler,as far as I'm concerned, would have done her Good Name an injustice.

She was however honoured on numerous other occasions. She was a social worker, not a plumber.

Postwar awards
"Every child saved with my help is the justification of my existence on this Earth, and not a title to glory"[7]
Letter to Polish Parliament

After the war, she was at first persecuted by the communist authorities, for the "crime" of being related to the Polish government in exile and association with the Armia Krajowa resistance. She was imprisoned, miscarried her second child, and her children were denied the right to study at a university. [2]

In 1965, Sendler was recognized by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations, which was confirmed in 1983 by the Israeli Supreme Court. She also was awarded the Commanders Cross by the Israeli Institute. It was only that year that the Polish communist government allowed her to travel abroad, to receive the award in Israel.

In 2003, Pope John Paul II sent a personal letter to Sendler, praising her wartime efforts. On 10 October 2003, Irena Sendler received the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest civilian decoration.

She was also awarded the Jan Karski Award "For Courage and Heart," given by the American Center of Polish Culture in Washington, D.C..

On 14 March 2007 Sendler was honored by Poland's Senate. Polish President Lech Kaczyński stated that she "can justly be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize" (though nominations are supposed to be kept secret). At age 97, she was unable to leave her nursing home to receive the honor, but she sent a statement through Elżbieta Ficowska, whom Sendler had saved as an infant.

Sendler was the last survivor of the Children's Section of the Żegota Council for Assistance to the Jews, which she had headed from January 1943 until the end of World War II.

[edit] Nobel nominee

In 2007, considerable publicity[8] accompanied a nomination of Sendler for the Nobel Peace Prize.[9] Although failed nominees for the award are not publicly announced by the Nobel organization for 50 years, this publicity focused a spotlight upon Sendler and her wartime contribution. The 2007 award, however, was presented to Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

no one knows who the Nobel nominees are till 50 years after the prize is awarded, the part about her loosing to Al Gore cant be true  cause we wont know if she was nominated for another 40 some years. Someone made up the Nobel story just to create an uproar.

Thanks for the great update 8shots.

So good to hear this remarkable woman was recognised and honoured by many others.

Whether the Nobel story is accurate or not really doen't matter very much, she sounds like most true heros who don't need a spotlight.

She was recognized for her great heroism  during the war, by a number of instutions

The nomination time thing has been around for a long time, it don't count if your mother nominates you, it has to be the prize committee and they don't reveal who was nominated for 50 years.

Like everything else, there are always leaks. I wouldn't be one bit surprised that they would overlook a SAINTLY woman. Then further debase what she did by giving it to a FARSE.
