OK I'm almost a month into barrel aging spirits at home. My wife got me a 2 liter cared oak barrel for valentine's day. Lots of people say to progress from a bourbon to whisky to scotch and so on. Skip that. I went right to port finishing. The ruby port has been in there almost 4 weeks. I'll pour that back into the port bottles and ten fill with a inexpensive whisky. I'm not sure what to port finish. Are there any suggestions? My goal is something akin to Angel's Envy or Woodinville.

We will see if 2 liters of aged port wine is worth a damn. Then we will see if port finished whisky is worth a damn. The wife won valentine's this year

Nice setup... just keep aging the port, every so often add a smackeral of of fine cognac, and in a year or so you can have tawny port...which is a big step up from port (in my book).
If you are anxious to go to some other liquor, I would try a good scotch, probably a light Speyside.

I love a tawney port. I read aging takes considerably shorter time with a Smaller barrel. The port is mostly for the flavor adder. I'll drink it too but dont want it to turn too okey

I am not a fan of heavy oak flavoring. To get to tawny, it has to age at least a year... the cognac is to mellow the flavor and replace the alcohol that evaporates off.

Reading this thread over the years let's me understand that some of you fellas are into all this stuff like a fine chef.
And all these years I've just been drinking the stuff. But not whisky. Years ago I drank rum, and then I didn't drink at all for twenty years ( working and raising kids), and then I began to drink brandy again like we used to in Africa. I don't age anything in any barrels. I just drink the stuff and read a book or look at the news sites on the computer. I guess drinking Scotch can get quite expensive.

I paid $22.00 for it at COSTCO and I've found it online for $19.00... but you can't have liquor delivered in Alabama...

Whisky can be expensive but I would rather drink a little of the better stuff than more of the rough stuff.

You got that right! OK I've had my port in the barrel for one month. I poured it back into the bottles it came in. I then added enough Evan Williams Bottled in Bond to fill the barrel. I chose this bourbon because it is pretty good for the price. I want to know if a port finish will greatly improve the stock bourbon. I have some EW left in the last bottle to have a comparison taste test. I will have a little starting in a month and then a week after until it is as good as I think it will get and them re bottle it back in the bottle it came in. A side note, I was really surprised by how much of the wood soaked in the port. When I pulled the bung most of the wood was soaked and dark red.

Very interested to know how it works for you. I've had exactly the same scotches from Glenmorangie, one finished in Sherry casks, one finished in Port casks, one the base Scotch. Personally, I like the Port finished best, Sherry finished next. The base is still very good, but does not have the complexity of the other two and is a little more "brilliant" up front. These were not offerings imported to the United States...

I tend to like port finished bourbons and scotches too so that's why I chose this to start. I got some Bumbu rum last night out with the wife. It was really good. Sweet caramel candy and bananas foster on the nose. I can smell it all day. The taser was not as sweet as the nose with hints of dark fruit and bananas.

One good thing with these small barrels and finishing at home is I can get multiple barrels to try more combinations.
