I can't believe the 2016 CFB season is already upon us and nobody has started a thread about it yet**cough-cough**you're slackin' Mark**cough-cough**. As I type this, there's a potential major upset in the works already, as the "#9" (as any sports fan knows, preseason polls are virtually worthless except as debate fodder) Tennessee Vols trail Appalachian State 6-13 late in the 3rd. Also, South Carolina Gamecocks trail Vandy 0-10 at halftime.

So, let's hear your prognostications and pontifications, folks!

One Texas team is playing great football… Gig'em Aggies…
Alabama appears to get tougher with every play.

Auburn is hurting...

Thanks, Ted! What a weekend! So hard to assess a team on the first game, but here's a few comments from me from the games I saw.

GA's Nick Chubb...222 yards yesterday. Great come back story and a greater kid.
GA's QB Jacob Eason should be on every bodies radar screen. He's special.

NC is gonna give some people problems in the ACC. That GA game was really good.

Nice win @ Kyle Field for the Aggs too.

Bama...is well Bama. Clearly the top team in the country.

Gator's have Luke Del Rio, (Jack Del Rio's kid) at QB. Played decent. Showed he can think under pressure and can make the throws he needs too.
The BIG story at UF is...WE HAVE A KICKER!!!! YippeeExcellentYippee

Eddie Pinero...or as they call him now...Dinero..money! Wink  Wears #15 like Tebow and can DRILL some kicks.
He hit a 77 yarder in practice.

Ya Mark... we won but there is much to work on if we want to stay with the big boys! Pine was great and full of enthusiasm. Excellent

YES~~
Scarlett looked good at RB, Calloway is a STAR, and I think Del Rio will settle down and be decent.

But, GA looked average on D and TN struggled with App State. Missouri looked horrible at WV, SC was almost beat by Vandy, so the East is wide open, IMO.

Overall, I believe that everybody has caught up to the SEC in recruiting. Except Bama... Bama will kill you! Not to mention that coaching staff is intelligent, they evolve as the game goes on. Whereas most coaches "stick" to the game plan, even if it's not working.

You believe there's more parity now around the country and the SEC isn't as dominant as it once was?

For the most part yes... Except for Alabama. The athletes that they are able to get on the offensive and defensive lines is flat amazing! I could run in that backfield.

Texas-Notre Dame… WOW, what a game.  As enjoyable as any football game I've watched in years.  Texas may be back in the mix… I really expected Notre Dame to beat them handily…  welcome surprise.

Saw the first half and had to go to bed. That freshman QB for TX was putting on a show.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend... Houston's beatdown of (preseason ranked) #3 Oklahoma 33-23! The 10-point score difference really didn't tell the whole story, as the outcome never seemed in doubt after the first quarter. The Cougars manhandled the Sooners on both sides of the ball. The Sooners may very well prove to be over-rated, but the eye test tells me that Houston is a pretty sound, well-coached football team.

Head coach Tom Herman has done a terrific job at U of H the past 2 years! Houston has traditionally been overshadowed by Texas and Texas A&M in the state, and in recent years by TCU and Baylor as well. Even though they're located in the middle of the most talent-rich part of Texas -- the Houston metropolitan area, Texas' 2 flagship schools have always dominated recruiting in the Houston area. Nevertheless, there's no shortage of talent to go around among the huge Houston-area high schools, and Herman has certainly made the most of the "leftover" talent he's landed.

Which brings up an interesting factoid I heard on sports radio this morning... Herman hasn't even had to board a plane to recruit his players; he just stays in Houston for the most part! While the nationwide average college player's distance from home to their chosen college is around 300 miles, the average U of H player's distance from home is 32 miles!

Looking at their schedule, Houston is very capable of going undefeated this year, as Oklahoma looked to be their toughest opponent. Though shocking upsets can and do happen every year, the only remaining team on their schedule that matches up reasonably well with them is Louisville. But I believe Houston is a much better team than Louisville and will likely be favored. They should beat their remaining opponents like a rented mule. So, assuming that happens, what then? Would an undefeated Houston beat out a 1-loss Power 5 conference team for a playoff spot? What if Oklahoma goes 11-1 and wins the B12? That's very possible. If that happens, I don't see how OU would get the nod over an undefeated team that beat them, despite not being in a P5 conference.

All hypothetical, I know. Anything can happen, and history shows the first week doesn't tell us much...which is why preseason rankings are bogus.

Regardless, I'm betting Tom Herman won't be the HC at Houston next year. There are too many big time schools who will have openings at season's end (LSU, perhaps?) and Herman is the current hot commodity. Houston, as a smaller regional college, has always been a stepping stone school for coaches, as they don't have the deep pockets of the flagship universities.

What do you boys think?

Upset?!?!?! That's putting it lightly. I was disgusted over the game, because I am an OU fan.
Although on a side note, Not one Texas team lost this weekend. If I recall correctly.

Houston did indeed look very good! Congrats to them. If ole Les Miles doesn't right his ship, LSU may be looking next year!

Rice lost to Western Kentucky, and Stephen F. Austin lost to Texas Tech.

My mistake, I didn't catch that one.

Correction, nearly every Texas team won their per-seaason games.

Did you guys see Buchelle's arm? You know who's son that is?
