I'm a bit surprised to see UCLA picked at #7, but the rest looks reasonable to me.

Looking forward to the start of the season!

UCLA had a pretty big year last season. They whooped Southern Cal and had a pretty good offense. Also beat V Tech like a rented mule in their bowl game, but yeah, #7 "seems" a little high to me too, Ted.

Gamecocks at #9 is a tad high, in my mind. SC has a lot to prove after losing Clowney and more importantly, QB Shaw, (who I think was vastly underrated.)
The #2 guy Thompson has a better arm, but damn Shaw could ball.

Well...looks like 'ol Notre Dame is ranked preseason....AGAIN. Roll Eyes

Yeah, I overlooked ND. They are perennially ranked way too high no matter what. Year after year, they are the most overrated team in college football, bar none. The only team in college football who can somehow remain in the top 10 with 2 and sometimes 3 losses.

Don't know enough about SC to say, but on the surface, they do seem to be a bit overrated too. But, who knows? Auburn totally came out of nowhere last year after their poor season two years ago. Nobody saw that coming at the beginning of the season last year.

Well, the new era begins. College football playoffs are finally a reality. Ted, I know you've always been a proponent of this. How you like it??

I like the playoff, but leave it to the NCAA to screw that up too. 4 games ain't what I'd call a "playoff." I think an 8 game playoff is reasonable.

I'd also like to see them dispense with preseason rankings, which are largely meaningless except to give guys like us something to talk about. Year in and year out there are sleeper teams that weren't ranked high or not at all that prove to be better than some of the preseason ranked teams, and they are penalized because of it. A loss hurts a preseason unranked team much worse than a ranked team and the timing of the loss is pretty significant. I don't like that rather arbitrary "system." It's way too subjective. Win - loss record ain't.

I say rankings should be 100% proven on the field and shouldn't be a factor before the first kickoff of the season. I don't believe rankings should ever come into play until mid season when there's been time for teams to prove themselves, and it should be based solely off a team's W-L record combined with strength of schedule, not preseason hype.

The BCS was a gravy train for the SEC and the bigger conferences, which I have no problem admitting that I liked.
I never cared for the "little engine that could" type schools getting their shot, because my school of choice, is a BIG program. I see this new playoff deal as a threat to keep Florida from at least getting a whiff at the big game.

I'm for any measure/ system that:
    1. Provides fans with additional interesting match-ups to watch that likely wouldn't have occurred otherwise. More football = better.
    2. Eliminates the ridiculously long, unnecessary dead time between the end of the regular season and the start of the bowl games. Less football = bad. Downtime during football season = bad.
    3. Provides additional suspense and unexpected turns of events, and therefore excitement at the end of the season.
    4. Doesn't include hype as factor in who later gets a shot at all the marbles (i.e. the Notre Dame hex).
    5. Ensures every team is fully in control of their destiny based on what they do on the field (no more speculation over whether or not the Boise States of the CF world really could play with the elite teams on a big stage; they'd have to prove it on the field like gladiators).
    6. Makes the eventual National Champion less controversial, for obvious reasons.
    7. Makes the "lesser" upper tier bowl games more meaningful because there's more to play for.

I like the idea that the lower ranked teams and/or those with weaker schedules that reach the playoffs would have tougher matchups in the playoffs via seeding, which helps eliminate the "easy schedule" arguments. This is also another reason why I hate the stupid 4 game "playoff" system.

I still think the "cream of the crop" teams will still usually rise to the top, but they will have to work harder to stay among the elite programs and hype and bias won't play as big a role.

Ah heck...let's just go to a best of 7 series like the NHL. Now THAT'S a playoff, my friend.Big Grin One and done, be it in a playoff scenario, or without, isn't a true test of who's number 1, IMO. But, I get that it has to be this way for various reasons.

I've often said...for the most part, the BCS got it right most of the time, given what they were working with. Meaning, I think the best team won the NC most years.

I could possibly go for that. As a fan, I could even get behind a system that involved settling tie-breakers with a fight to the death with swords in an arena full of live tigers.

As much as college tuition costs (and I will know all about that first-hand VERY soon), I'd say they are already being paid handsomely via their athletic scholarships.

Tis a great time ... when college football starts. As far as my predictions, I think this year may be very interesting. My Gators won't suck as bad (as last year), and I sure hope somebody kicks the Criminoles arse back to Tallyho. They have become about as repulsive as the U.
