One of the great things about this sport is the fact there always seems to be alot new to learn. Another thing I like is the equipment, nicely built guns and the craftmanship of a well designed scope.

But today my friend taught me a lesson. We went to the range with our .22 cal rifles for some precision shooting. I managed some nice groups. Some guys there with high end equipment $hot even better. But the bad ass groups came from my friend. We are talking massively consistent groups, hole in hole, on 50yds. The funny thing is this was done with an old weathered rifle with a 2.5x7 Pine Ridge scope he bought used for 25$ in Cabelas (they sometimes sell used equipment).

I guess I learned the biggest lesson in a long time, that no matter how much people spend on equipment that there is no substitute for talent.

So for those of you with limited budget - you can definetely get the job done with cheaper scopes. Cool  It might be a bit more challenge but challenge is good.

For some reason I tend to think that the 22 rifles made 20 to 30 yrs ago and older tend to be more accurate.  Possibly this is because the new models I have bought are stainless but I  have yet to find one that is really as accurate as I would like it to be at 50 to 100 yds. I remember being able to take 50 yr old winchester 22 and shoot flower stems, pieces of string, nail heads with great consistency and I find that an inch at 50 is about the best I am getting with the most recent 3 different models and brands of 22. Some of the old guns really are shooters.

Yeah, dont get me wrong though. New rifles can be good and I sure love my Zeiss scope. Its just an uplifting thought for those with limited budget (and I guess they are many today) that they can do impressive things with cheap equipment. Just takes practice.

I've got one of those old Winchesters - a 72A with a 30-40 year-old Bushnell 4X scope - and it shoots great. Best thing was that I got for free. Second best was that I had the presence of mind to hold on to it through several moves. Guess I'd better keep hanging on to it.
