A friend of mine has loaned me his Monarch 8-32x50, to try on my new Remington 700, .243 Cal.  Since Nikon has discontinued making this scope and they have a great sale going on I am considering a Monarch 4-16x50.  Being I am a new distance shooter I do not have the knowledge on these optics.  Probably going to do some 300 and 600 yards to start with.  Can anyone shed some light on what would be a good item to purchase.  My friend is asking $525 for his and the new one is going for 490.  Thanks Skip

If all you are going to do is Target shoot I would just get a fixed power SWFA SS, and save a couple of hundred dollars. They are great scopes, and better suited for what you are getting into.
