Hi.
I have a Tasco SS 20x42 and my work distance is 27 yards (25m). I think it is not so sharp as it should be. A little bit "foggy". Sure I tried to set correct parallax distance. I have a 100% vision. And crosshair is very sharp. Is it possible to fix that? Thanks.

20x will be blurry at close range, even with pretty good glass. Most guys around here say don't go for magnification that high unless you splurge for the HD glass.

I see. Now I also have a Hawke 8-32x56 and it has very close pictire quality to Tasco SS 20x42 on the same magnification. But it has 56mm glass

Objective lens size doesn't play as much of a part as glass quality. With magnification that high you're magnifying all the optical imperfections. HD glass means High Density. It is apochromatically corrected. Thats a way of getting all the colors on 1 focal point. Non HD glass will have them slightly off. It is very expensive. SWFA'a cheapest HD scope is $600. Best solution without spending out the nose is just to slack off on the magnification. Most guys who have experience with them say the 16x is as high as you should go.

How old is your scope? The SS scopes were first marketed by Tasco, then later SWFA took over. I know that the lower power SS scopes were improved with better coatings, etc, but I am not sure about the 20x. The original Tasco version was not terribly good optically, but it held zero and tracked beautifully (and it was better than anything else in that price range with high magnification). Most likely, that is just how the scope is, unless you think that it is an issue with close focus i.e. if it is noticeably sharper at a longer distance. For example, if you look at a target at 40 yards and similarly optimize parallax, is the image quality better? ILya

Any 20x42 isn't going to be great - well, maybe if you spend a few thousand dollars.
Regardless of application, better glass is far more important than higher magnification , all other things being equal. |

The 20x SS scopes were just too much magnification for the available internal dimensions. The whole thing was designed around 10X with stellar results, the 16X still being viable but 20x was a real stretch. |

25Meters. Well its hard to imagine the need for a scope at a distance I bow hunt but be as it may the 16x is greatly preferable to the 20x at that distance. I had the 20x and later traded it. I still have a 16x and a 6x both seem to do well. I was on the 22 range a couple days ago with the 6x at 50 yds and 100 yds and it did great. I also had a 2-7 Redfield on the range a 200 on a .223 and I was happy with it. The most significant issue with the20x42 scope is how dim and grey the image gets in low light conditions but that is where the 6x 42 comes to life and is exceptionally bright. That is a matter of exit eye pupil (how bright the image appears) not a glass issue.
