I'm thinking about getting a pair of "7X50 with Ranging Reticle and Compass" Binoculars.

These will stay hidden under the front seat of the truck and occasionally go boating.

It looks like there must be a military spec for these because there are SO many out there.

I can't afford the Steiners and the Nikon, Olympus and Tasco all look good.

So dear Optics Wizard, pray tell, What's the difference between the two Tasco's (OS36 & OS54)?

Also - amongst all these (NOT the Steiners) do you have a preference?

As far at the two Tasco bincoculars go; they are essentially the same. The are the same size, same configuration, same (basic) features, same warranty, etc. The difference between the two, according to the Tasco website is that the OS54 "adds Rubicon-coated objective lenses for glare-reduction and increased contrast."

I've never been convinced that "ruby" coatings do anything of value and in fact, I've only ever seen them advertised on very cheap optics (Tasco, Simmons, Rugged Exposure, etc.) Tasco, by the way, is a fully-owned brand of Bushnell Outdoor Products and generally it is Bushnell's lesser optics that get marketed under the Tasco badge.

Personally, were I making the decision between these binoculars, I would go for the Nikon.
