I just received my new Leupold VX-III 4.5-14X50 LR scope.  This is my first Leupold and from everything I've read I was expecting the image quality to be far superior to the "bargain" scopes I currently own.  I compared the image quality by viewing the text on a small sign located approximately 300 yards away.  The sign has "HOME FOR SALE" in Medium/Small block letters and below that "BY OWNER" in smaller block letters.  I set my Tasco world class plus 8-32x50 to 14 power and adjusted the focus for sharpness.  Then I tried the Leupold and adjusted the side focus for maximum sharpeness.  Guess what.  The $250.00 Tasco actually has a sharper image. In both scopes I can read the larger block letters.  When viewing thru the Tasco it is easier to read the smaller block letters saying "BY OWNER" that I can with the new Leupold.  The Tasco is noticably sharper while on the Leupold I can barely make out the "BY OWNER" text.  Does this seem right?  Should I send my scope to Leupold and have it checked out?

That is strange.  Try this, compare the two scopes at dawn, dusk, and high noon.  You should see a real difference favoring the Leupold at dusk and dawn.  If you are near any woods, place an earth toned colored object amongst the foliage.  You should be able to better make it out with the Leupold.

Wow that is kind of a shock. Try what Ranburr mentioned and write back with the results.  This may be interesting.  While I am not a big fan of Leupold (think you can do better or just as good for less moeny) I'd think that the new VXIII should be much better than the Tasco.

I went ahead and sent the scope in to Leupold to have it checked out.  I did try it in low light conditions and I would still say my Tasco was showing a crisper picture of the aforementioned target.  I will retest when I get it back sometime next week.

Please wrap up the Leo and send it to my address, I will send you a brand new Tasco and a bottle of Scotch. Don't worry it will be babied and well cared for, regardless of it's shortcomings.
