I'm thinking about getting this scope http://swfa.com/Bushnell-6-24x40-Elite-4200-Rifle-Scope-P253.aspx with a 1/4 moa target dot for silhouette/target shooting. Just wondering if it would work ok for deer hunting or to not even try it . I just don't know how visible the dot would be in a wooded setting. I have a duplex reticle scope that works fine and I could keep it but it would be nice if I could sell it and use the money for the target dot if it would work.

That would be way to powerful in my neck of the woods for deer. 6x on the low side is still very strong. Not to mention that the Dot would be hard to find in the dark woods. You might get away with it over the cut cane fields.

personally I think that's way too much power and a target dot flat out disappears

10 4 on the dot playing houdini !!! i have one on a 223, tried it on tree rats NO GOOD. I would go with a fine plex ret. and 3-16 6500. this should do both jobs nicely

I think you would be very disappointed if that trophy buck walks out at dusk and you can't find the dot. I would pass.

Thanks for the help guys. I was afraid of the "disappearing dot at dusk". I'm probably going to go with the scope anyway but keep the hunting scope I've been using. I know it works in the woods...A lost dot and a big buck, that would be a major disappointment.

This sounds like a good reason to get another rifle and scope. One for hunting and another for target.

10-4 good buddy...This new scope would be going on a new gun, a T/C Encore (in 6.5 Swede or 260, don't have the barrel yet) that's going to be something of an "all-around" gun. On the other had I can already hear my trusty Marlin 30-30 in the closet pouting about not going hunting anymore ...What I should do is pick up a good high quality scope for the 30-30 and keep hunting the woods with it since it's perfect for where I hunt and keep the new one as the fun gun till my hunting needs change. |
