I've been thinking of switching out these Leupold QR's for Talley QD's.  So I did a trial fit with the same scope.  The rear Talley ring is positioned (sorry no pictures) about 1/2 to 5/8" closer to receiver end and therefore positioned the scope further rearward too.  I thought the scope objective bell might be touching the barrel as it's very close with the Leupold QR medium's.  But the Talley QD Lows are even higher so it fit okay (even more clearance with the barrel).  My problem is now the eyepiece is closer to my eye and I was considering a Swaro Z6 which has an even longer eyepiece than the Leupold.  Ideas?

Call Gary Turner at Talley and tell him which scopes you are considering.  You also have to consider the eye relief of the scope, not just the physical position of the eyepiece itself.  So, having the eyepiece closer to your eye may actually be necessary, depending on what the scope's eye relief is.  The main disadvantage to the Sako tapered dovetail mounting system is there are fewer mount options for it than with conventional tapped hole receiver mounts.  I still think in concept, it's a great idea, because it's very strong, and the bases actually get tighter during recoil.  In reality, you just don't have many mount systems to choose from, and I'm not a fan of the Sako Optiloks.  I've been fortunate in that I've never had a problem with scope positioning on my Sakos using Talley mounts, but as you have discovered, some scopes are more compatible with that setup than others.

Thanks.  I did talk to Gary a couple of years ago when I bought my Sako.  He suggested I use the bases meant for Sako Actions I, II, III for my long action 30-06 (IV).  The rear base was over-hanging the ejection port and the smaller base wouldn't do so.  He was right.  While it wasn't any big deal I liked the look better.  But while I was waiting on the replacement base I used a Leupold QR base which actually over-hangs much more and only recently thought to try the Talley's.

What I discovered was that the rear ring set about 1/2" further to the rear.  The Swaro Z-6 2-12x50 has an ocular that measures 3.86" in length.  My Leupold 3.5-10 measures 3.1".  Some quick math shows the Swaro's ocular to be about .76" longer, say 3/4".  Assuming both scopes are pushed as far forward in the rings as possible the Swaro in the Talley's would be about 1 1/4" closer to the butstock (and my eye) than where my Leupold is now in the Leupold QR's.  That makes me nervous, regardless of eye relief specifications.  And if I put the Swaro Z6 in the Leupold QR's it would still be about 3/4" closer to my eye.

Interestingly, I discovered that because the Talley rings are higher compared to the Leupold's I'm pretty sure I could mount a 56mm (not that I'd necessarily want to) objective Z6 on this Sako using Talley Low QD rings.  They are about 1/8" higher than Leupold QR Medium's.  Right now the Leupold scope sits in QR Medium's.  I can't even put the Swaro in the same rings because the diameter of the ocular is bigger and would touch the top of the base.

I'm kind of dissappointed because the Talley's seem to be a much stronger set-up and I was looking forward to switching over to them on my Sako.
