I'm putting together a build sheet for a Remington 700 in .308.

I have decided to go with a SWFA 6x42. I am leaning towards Talley rings and base.

I saw that they have rings with built in bases. But I have noticed that most people are using a pic rail with 20 MOA slope. This is my 1st gun with glass besides my 10/22 witch has some cheap POS on top of it.

My questions are

1. Are the Talley rings with built in bases any good.

2. One piece or two piece base.

3. Is it worth the effort to bed the base? Or is it like sport bikes? You will never match the potential of the machine.

Thanks

Welcome to Optics Talk.

1) Yes, Talley Light Weight rings are exceptionally well made, light weight, strong, and ridiculously inexpensive. I've even opted to replace my picatinny rails with the Talley's. With the SS your purchasing, there's ample "up" to get you out about as far as the .308 shooting accurately.

2) The Talley LW's are a one piece, integrated ring mount. Meaning, there's no need for a separate base.

3) This is a Ford/Chevy debate, but I have two sets of Talley LW's on two Remington 700's and have not bedded. You could, I guess.

Thanks. You'll need LOW 30mm Talley rings for the 6x SS BTW.

I also have a couple of rifles with talley lightweight rings.  I like them very much. Since the ringmount is a one piece rather than separate ring and base that removes one possible problem - less parts = less things to go wrong. I suppose you could bed them by putting a drop of locktite below them when you installed them if you wanted but I do not believe any more than that is advisable.  As for the 6x SS I have both the Mil Quad (1/10 mil per click) and the Mil Dot (1/4 moa per click).  The 6x is the brightest of the SS scopes as it will have a true 7mm exit eye pupil so is a solid choice for low light.
The reticle in the mil dot is more simple but heavier lines where the reticle in the mil quad is very fine and wonderfully precise for target but for hunting I would probably select the Mil Dot as it is slightly heavier and easy to pick up quickly.  I love the Mil Quad on my 16x SS it really is most useful at high magnifications.   Also note you can get custom engraved knobs from Kenton Industries that will match the caliber and specific bullet you shoot and make dialing in correction very quick.
