I ordered some talley rings for my tikka t3 lite stainless 270 and the base screws do not fit the reciever holes. they are too big in Diameter. I ordered these straight from Gary at talley.

the last time I bought talleys for my tikka t3 hunter 270wsm I had no problems with the screws supplied.

I guess I will just call gary monday morning.

I've onlly installed one scope.  That is a Sightron Sll, 3-9 and it went on a Tikka T3 lite SS in 270 WSM.  It never occured to me to use rings other than the ones that were provided with the rilfle.  They were a snap to install, and have performed perfectly, reamaining rock solid through a couple of hundred rounds, including an arduous fall hunting trip in MT.

I've read comments suggesting that perhaps they are inferior and should be avoided.  What are the shortcomings of the factory Tikka units?  I'm becoming a little twitchy about them, wondering if something unpleasant is lurking just around the corner.

I understand the Tally rings are excellent, as well as several other brands.  This is going to be an issue shortly, because I'll be replacing this scope with a 52 mm objectivec, probably Kahles, and that will required a different mounting height.  Do I go with Beretta/Tikka rings or some other type?

J,

I bet Gary will hook you up when you give him a call.  I just installed some Talley lightweights on a T3, and they worked perfectly.

Jack,

Several guys around the net have said they have used the stock rings, and got along just fine.  On the other hand, many have preferred to use after market rings.  There are several brands out there made to fit the T3.  Talley, Warne, and Burris Signatures come immediately to mind, and I'm sure I've missed some.  There should be something out there to suit your taste.

I agree. Give Gary a call. I have used Talleys for years with no problems.

yeah, I will call gary, I really didn't expect a issue when I sat down to install them yesterday, since the last talleys I put on a tikka worked out with no issue.

I am sure gary will mail me 4 screw right away - I just wanted to be done with this saturday. I have time no that deer season is over.

JackG - the tikka supplied rings are soft!! I installed a scope for a friend on a tikka and while I did not break anything, I could tell they were soft, I didn't like the feel while torqueing them down. I also don't like crimp on style rings - even though they have that post sticking down, I like something more secured to the gun.

I will update ya'll monday night.

Jsimoneaud,
Good luck! When you get it all worked out you should let Gary know what the final verdict was.

yeah, I will call Gary and let him know the results.

at this point I am fairly sure it's not Talley's problem.

I am not sure what budsgunshop's return policy is or Beretta's. but since I have not shot it and it's just over 30 days old - I hope I don't get the shaft. I don't want to have to use clamp on style rings.

ok guys - this was my fault, I didn't put enough force behind the Fat wrench, I was scared to screw up the threads in the gun or on the screws. After reading up on the return policy at both the gun shop and beretta, I decided I had nothing to lose, so I got my wrench, turned the screw counter-clockwise until I felt it click, then gave it a good firm turn and they started going in. I have never had to be this hard on screws before, so in my opinion the threading on the reciever does have some Burr's or something. the end result is my talleys are now mounted and torqued down and I am ready to lap and mount the scope.

I am calling Gary to offer to pay for the screws they sent me and the postage.

I'm really new to scopes and how they mount on the rifle, so please bear with me.  I've only installed one scope, and that is on a Tikka.  The rifle came with what I assume, is the mount, already attached to the receiver.  It is a flat piece of steel, attached to the receiver by a pair of screws.  There is bevel on the outside edges of the mount, allowing the factory rings that came with the rifle, to clamp onto.   The ring bases have screws that allow the ring to be tightened down under that bevel.   There are also two holes, one for each ring base, drilled into the beveled mount.   The rings have a small pin that drops into that hole.  So in addition to the clamp, the ring is also held in place by that pin to prevent it from sliding forward or back.  The scope has remained rock solid through several hundred 270 WSM rounds and some arduous hunting treks.   So I have no complaints.

However, I'm planning on replacing the scope.    So, I may look at some other rings.  Considering how the rings are is designed to work in this mount, with pins and clamps, how would other rings fit that system?  For example, how do Talley rings hook up to this mount?  Thanks.

Maybe this photo of Tally rings will help.

JackG - what you are describing as the mount. is actually the receiver, that flat piece is not screwed to the receiver, it is the top of the receiver. you are probably looking at the plastic screw hole fillers, you can back those out with a screwdriver and then buy some talleys that screw into the receiver. I just prefer mounts that are secured by screws.

I hope this answers your questions.
